Devil Free Throws Finish Off F&M 71-63

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team turned in a solid team effort to post a key Centennial Conference win over visiting Franklin & Marshall, 71-63, on Wednesday night. The Red Devils improve to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in the conference, moving just a game back of the Diplomats, who fell to 14-4 and 9-2 in the CC.

 

The Diplomats opened the game with a three-pointer and pulled in front, 13-9, at the 14:09 mark of the first half. Junior Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) led the Devils on a run, hitting a pair of three-pointers, a lay-up, and handed out a pair of assists to put Dickinson in front for the remainder of the half at the 6:32 mark.

 

Honig buried another three-pointer to put the Devils on top, 35-31, at the break. The Devils held a six point advantage before F&M scored seven unanswered points to pull ahead, 40-39, with 15:41 remaining in the game.

 

The Diplomats held their final lead with just under 10 minutes to play, going up, 50-49, on a Max Brewer three-pointer at the 9:28 mark.

 

Junior Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) answered with a three-pointer of his own, and the Devils would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game. The Red Devils would score just one field-goal in the final eight minutes of the game, but would sink 14-of-16 free throw attempts to stretch the lead to as many as 11 in the final seconds.

 

The Red Devils were deadly from the foul line, converting 25-of-28 attempts (89%) on the night. The Red Devils committed just nine turnovers and blocked seven shots on the night.

 

Honig led all scorers with 21 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers while going 4-for-5 from the free throw line and handing out five assists. Sophomore Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) tallied 17 points and six rebounds, hitting 10-of-11 free throws.

 

Landy went 5-for-6 from the line, scoring 13 points and controlling six rebounds. He added a pair of timely three-pointers as well. Senior Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) reached double-figures with 10 points, shooting 6-for-6 from the line to go with a pair of blocked shots. Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) gave quality minutes as well, scoring eight points, grabbing four rebounds and blocking two shots.

 

Four Diplomats reached double-figures, led by Brewe and Hayk Gyokchyan, each with 13 points.

 

The Red Devils are on the road this weekend, traveling to Ursinus College on Saturday for a 3:00 pm tip-off.
