(Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team returned to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, and found itself in a dogfight at Haverford. The Devils took a four point lead into halftime, but a second half surge led the hosts to a, 77-60, win.
The Red Devils battled to a, 28-24, advantage at halftime, led by a strong start from sophomore Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, Pa./Lawrenceville School). Wixted tallied 11 points and five rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
After the break, the Devils quickly ran the score to 34-28 as Wixted scored two quick baskets. Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollows Hills West) led the charge after the break, adding a lay-up, two rebounds and a steal in the early run.
A pair of free throws from junior Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and a steal and lay-up by Vince White (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) gave the Devils a double-digit lead, their largest of the game, at the 15:16 mark.
Haverford answered, tying the game, 40-40, knocking down four three-points in a span of just over two minutes. Eli Schwarz and Louis Cipriano did the damage, each sinking a pair of triples.
Gibby Graves converted a conventional three-point play to put the hosts on top, 43-40, and Cipriano collected a blocked shot by Bret Cohen to give the 'Fords a 45-40 lead, with 11:04 to play.
Haverford continued the run, extending the margin to 52-40 on a Graves three-pointer at the 8:52 mark. First-year Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) broke the run with a tip-in but the 'Fords struck back, taking a 56-42 lead with 6:59 remaining in regulation.
Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) hit a three-pointer and the teams traded baskets until Haverford gained its biggest advantage of the game, 66-49, with 3:59 on the clock.
The Devils continued to play even, but could not gain any ground in the final minutes.
Wixted scored a game-high 20 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists while going 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Honig finished with 12 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Landy handed out four assists and scored five points.
Seniors Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School) and White chipped in with six points each while Cox matched a game-high with eight rebounds.
Haverford had five players reach double-figures. Graves led the way with 19 points and five rebounds, hitting 6-of-7 free throws. Cohen tallied 18 points and eight rebounds as the 'Fords improve to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
The Red Devils slip to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the CC. They travel to Washington College on Tuesday afternoon for a 5:00 pm tip-off.
