(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team rallied in the late going to post a key road win, playing at Washington College on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Devils erased a seven point deficit at halftime and rallied for a 76-67 victory.
The Red Devils committed eight turnovers in the opening 10 minutes as the host Shoremen pulled in front, 22-20, going on a 12-0 run following the second foul on the Centennial Conference's leading scorer, Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville).
Junior Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) opened the game with a three-pointer and the Red Devils were off to a solid start. Landy finished a 5-0 run to put Dickinson in front, 20-10, with 14:04 remaining in the first half.
Fouls and turnovers led to the Shoremen run as they pulled even at the 8:53 mark. Washington led the remainder of the half, stretching the margin to as many as eight. Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) drew a foul with just over a second remaining in the half, cutting the deficit to, 44-37.
Landy scored 10 points in the first half, hitting 4-of-5 shots, including a pair of three pointers. He also picked-up three fouls as a physical first half saw both teams combine for 24 before the break.
Wixted hit a pair of free throws and a lay-up as the Devils scored eight points in the opening three minutes of the second half. Landy followed up with back-to-back lay-ups to give Dickinson a 45-44 lead. Wixted took a charge, as Stephen Poarch was flagged with his fourth foul at the 15:30 mark.
The Red Devils held the Shoremen scoreless for the first 6:25 of the half before Charlie McShane broke the draught to put Washington up, 46-45. Sean Brooks drained a three-pointer to stretch the lead to 49-45.
Landy answered with a three-pointer on the other end to pull the Devils back within one. Honig drained a triple to give Dickinson the lead, 51-49, with 11:29 to play in the game.
The Shoremen tied the game before Wixted came back with a conventional three-point play to take a 54-51 advantage. McShane evened the score with a long-range shot, tying the game, 54-54, with a little over 10 minutes on the clock. Landy hit a jumper to put Dickinson back on top, 56-54.
Wixted caught an elbow on the other end and would leave the game. The Devils then forced a turnover and Honig buried a three-pointer to give the Devils a 59-54 cushion.
Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./LaSalle College) returned to the line-up, and knocked-down a big three-pointer to give Dickinson a 62-56 lead with 6:41 remaining. Collins made a steal and Vince White (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) finished on the other end to stretch the lead to eight.
Collins made another steal, leading to the fifth foul on Poarch at the 5:19 mark. Honig hit both free throws to extend the margin to double-figures. The Red Devils continued to build on the lead as Collins fed White for another basket.
Landy add two more free throws before McShane sank back-to-back triples to make the score, 70-62, with 3:27 to play in regulation. Honig tallied a pair of steals, a lay-up and two free throws in the final minutes as the Devils held on for a key road win, 76-67.
Landy led the way with 21 points and six rebounds, hitting 8-of-10 shots while going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Honig finished with 20 points and five assists, hitting 7-of-8 free throws on the day.
Wixted tallied nine points and eight rebounds while White and Collins gave quality minutes, combining for 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.
McShane went 4-for-5 from behind the arc to lead Washington (0-14, 0-7 CC) with 16 points. Dave Knox had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Swarthmore College on Saturday for a 3:00 tip-off with the Garnet.
