(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #12-ranked Dickinson men's soccer team scored twice, early in the second half and held on for a key Centennial Conference victory, defeating visiting Gettysburg, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Miller Memorial Field.
Dickinson held the advantage in the first half with a 12-6 edge in shots, putting six on target, but could not find the back of the net. That changed early in the second half as the Red Devils put a goal on the board, just 1:56 after the break.
The Red Devils drew a foul in the penalty area and senior Jamie Martin (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) converted the penalty kick to put the Devils up, 1-0.
Dickinson doubled the lead, just 1:49 later as senior Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/The American School) finished an assist from sophomore Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy).
Gettysburg answered in the 85th minute, looking to rally. Noah Sheetz-Ziegel struck off an assist from Tyler Shaffner, with 5:53 remaining in regulation.
That would close out the scoring, however, as the Red Devils held on to improve to 9-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Junior goaltender Reed Milbrath (Dickerson, Md./Sandy Springs Friends) earned the start in the nets, making five saves for Dickinson. Connor Darrell finished with six saves, all in the first half of action. Gettysburg falls to 2-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.
The Red Devils are home again on Tuesday for a non-conference match with Eastern Mennonite University. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Miller Memorial Field.
