Red Devils Double-Down to Advance to Centennial Championship

Box Score

(Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team rallied past Johns Hopkins and into the Centennial Conference Championship, posting a 73-64 win over the Blue Jays on Friday night. The Red Devils recorded two double-doubles, matched a school record with their 19th win of the season, and make their second appearance in the conference final in three seasons.

Jimmy Hammer and sophomore Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Lawrenceville School) matched three-pointers to open the game, setting the stage for a thrilling semifinal match-up. Hopkins led throughout the half, pulling in front 20-11, at the 12:48 mark.

Dickinson rallied to cut the deficit to one before the Blue Jays regained an eight point advantage. Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) hit a pair of free throws to make the score, 38-32, at the break.

A Daniel Corbett three-pointer gave Hopkins a 47-36 lead with 13:02 remaining in the game. The Devils would erase the deficit with an 11-0 run, triggered by a Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) three-pointer.

The Red Devils tied the game with just over nine minutes remaining as Wixted powered in a lay-up to knot things up, 47-47.

George Bugarinovic hit a pair of free throws and Chris Barsanti (Hummelstown, Pa./Tilton School, Conn.) answered with a great cut to the basket. A nice pass between Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) and Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) led a reverse lay-up and the Devils first lead of the game.

Hammer drained a three-pointer on the other end to regain the lead. He hit another on the next possession to put Hopkins up, 55-51. Wixted drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws, but Hammer hit from the corner, once again, to stretch the lead to 58-53.

Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) drove to the basket and scored, but Hammer would respond, hitting two free throws to make the score, 60-55.

Collins pulled the Devils within one, following up a missed lay-up. The Devils held on defense and Landy knocked-down a three-pointer to put Dickinson on top, 62-60. Hopkins tied the game with a pair of free throws at the 2:36 mark.

Honig banked a runner off the glass to put the Devils on top at the two minute mark. Wixted blocked a shot and the Devils forced a long three-point attempt that hit the shot clock and went out of bounds.

Wixted came up even bigger on the other end, calmly draining a three-pointer to give Dickinson a five point advantage with 54 seconds to play.

The defense held again with Wixted controlling the rebound. He found Honig, who was fouled and hit both ends of a one-and-one. Hopkins was forced to take a quick shot and Honig grabbed the rebound. He hit two more free throws to stretch the margin to 71-62.

Dickinson forced a turnover, taking possession with 17 seconds on the clock. Landy hit a pair of free throws to run the lead to 11. Hopkins scored one final basket for the final of 73-64.

Remarkably, both Wixted and Honig recorded double-doubles on the night. Wixted scored a team-high 18 points and controlled 10 rebounds, adding three assists, two blocks and two steals. Honig tallied 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, handing out six assists as well. He went 6-for-6 from the free throw line as the Devils hit 17-of-21 as a team.

Collins finished with 13 points, blocking a pair of shots. Landy reached double-figures with 12 points to go with six rebounds.

Hammer led all scorers with 21 points behind five three-pointers. Connor McIntyre added 11 points and nine rebounds for Hopkins (16-10).

The Red Devils (19-7) will return to Lancaster on Saturday night to face the winner of #1-seed Franklin & Marshall and #4-Muhlenberg. Tip-off for the championship game is set for 7:00 pm.
