(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's and women's soccer teams combined for 10 goals in a season opening doubleheader at Phyllis Joan Miller Memorial Field on a beautiful Friday evening. Senior Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/The American School) scored a pair of brilliant goals to lead the Red Devil men past Catholic University, 5-3.
Mena beat the defense and chipped a shot into the upper left corner of the net in the 17th minute to put the Devils on the board.
Senior Derek Kachadurian (Weston, Mass./Weston) struck, less than two minutes later, to stretch the lead to 2-0, scoring off an assist from Ned Wagner (Washington, D.C./Upper Canada College).
Catholic answered almost immediately, as Ian Smith tallied with just 20 seconds coming off the clock to cut the margin to 2-1, at the 26 minute mark.
Sophomore Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) gave the Devils another two-goal lead, scoring on an assist from Kachadurian.
The Cardinals kept coming back. Ben Sykes pulled Catholic within a goal in the 60th minute of the contest, with an assist from Justin Oloriz.
First-year Danny Sheppard (Rydal, Pa./Abington) put a goal on the board for the Red Devils as Kachadurian served a beautiful volley to his foot in the 70th minute. Mena capitalized on a free-kick with a well placed shot from about 30 yards out.
Catholic answered one last time in the final minute. Nico Bartomomeo scored off a Kevin Romano assist with 58 seconds remaining in the game.
Junior Reed Milbrath (Dickerson, Md./Sandy Springs Friends) made four saves for the Red Devils while Catholics' Thorsten Meuschke made eight stops.
The Red Devils improve to 1-0 on the season. They travel to Misericordia University on Sunday. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
