(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a 3-0 win at the Gettysburg Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Red Devils topped Penn State Harrisburg (25-17, 25-19, 25-14). The Red Devils suffered a 3-1 setback in their second match, falling to Shenandoah University (25-21, 25-19, 27-29, 25-17).
Sophomore Laura Silverman (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) led a balanced attack in the win, recording eight kills and three blocks. Senior Joanna DeCastro (Far Hills, N.J./West Morris Mendham) tallied seven kills, five service aces and five digs.
Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and Emily Kisak (Columbia, Md./Howard) each had four kills. Smith added an ace and six digs while Kisak scored another point with a solo block. First-year Lauren Ahern (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) chipped in with three kills and a pair of blocks.
Senior captain Grace Morgan (Williamsburg, Va./York Suburban) served up three aces and had three digs. Sophomore captain Jenn Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) dished out 17 assists.
The Red Devils dropped a tough decision to Shenandoah, but kept each set close, claiming a, 29-27, marathon to capture the third.
Smith led the way in the nightcap, recording a match-high 15 kills to go with 10 digs. Silverman tallied seven kills and a pair of blocks. Kisak returned a pair of blocks as well, adding five kills.
DeCastro and Morgan combined for six aces. Morgan also picked up eight digs while first-year Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) recorded seven. Morrissey handed out 15 assists to go with four digs and four block assists. Ahern chipped in with four kills.
The Red Devils (1-1) will face Gallaudet and Penn State Altoona on Saturday at 10:00 am and 12:00 pm.
