#7 Hobart Claims Opener Behind Strong Running Game

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team did all it could to contain #7-ranked Hobart College, but a solid running game led the Statesmen to a, 30-7 victory, in the season opener.

Steven Webb rushed for 203 yards on 18 carries, scoring three touchdowns to lead the way for Hobart. The Statesment covered 343 yards on the ground while Patrick Conlan completed 8-of-16 passes for 127 yards.

There were remarkably no turnovers in the game as both teams did a good job of protecting the football. Junior quarterback Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) completed 10-of-18 passes for 77 yards, adding 46 yards rushing. Senior captain Todd Smolinsky (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) caught five passes for 37 yards on the day.

On the other side of the ball, senior captain Michael Miller (Hainesport, N.J./Bishop Eustace) led the defense with 12 tackles, including nine solo stops and two tackles-for-loss. Shane Mitchell (Whitehaven, Pa./Crestwood) added 12 tackles as well and sophomore David Chow (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) broke through for a nine-yard sack and forced a fumble, but the Statesmen were able to recover.

Hobart put up points on 3-of-5 possessions in the first half to take a 17-0 lead at the break. The Statesmen opened the second half with a 65-yard drive to stretch the margin to 24-0.

The Red Devil defense forced back-to-back punts and pinned Hobart on its own 10 yard line, early in the fourth quarter. Hobart answered as Webb ran for 39 yards in a 90-yard scoring drive.

The Devils spoiled the shutout with solid drive late in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Mark Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) started things off with a 31 yard kick-off return to the Dickinson 34 yard line.

Ahnell rushed for 23 yards, diving in from the one yard line, and senior fullback Mike Capone (Dupont, Pa./Pittston Area) broke for a 10 yard run.

Hobart ended the day with 343 yards rushing and 470 yards of total offense. Trayvon Toney recorded eight tackles while Tyre Coleman tallied two tackles for loss and an eight yard sack.

Junior Adam Kaminski (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) averaged 37.5 yards per punt, dropping two inside the 10 yard line.

The Red Devils are home again next weekend, hosting Juniata College at 1:00 pm.
