(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team overcame a first half deficit and made a late run to overtake visiting Johns Hopkins for a 75-65 win at the Kline Center on Tuesday night.
Senior captain Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) took control of the game in the second half, leading the charge with 20 of the Devils' final 34 points. He trigged the first of two runs in the second half, converting a three-point play before knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to put Dickinson in front, 50-44, with 11:46 remaining in the game.
The Blue Jays answered to pull even at the 5:43 mark, but the Red Devils would close out the game with strong play from preseason All-Americans, Honig and junior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic). The duo combined for 13 of the Devils' final 15 points to secure the win.
The Red Devils couldn't find their rhythm in the early going, but were able to keep the Blue Jays within striking distance. Hopkins led by as many as nine in the opening stanza, taking a 21-12 lead at the 10:24 mark.
Dickinson went on a 10-1 run to close out the first half, cutting the deficit to just three at the break, 30-27. The Blue Jays came out strong again in the early minutes of the second half. They stretched the lead back to eight in the first three minutes.
Hopkins led by eight with just over 15 minutes to play in the game when the Red Devils made a move. A lay-up from sophomore Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) and a three-pointer from sophomore Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./ Delaware Valley) cut the margin to three with 13:25 on the clock.
Honig would take over at the point, tying the game at 44 with an old fashion three-point play. He stretched the Devils' lead to seven before Hopkins rallied to tie the game at 60, with 5:43 remaining in regulation. Honig and Wixted then anchored that final push to close out the Blue Jays, 75-65.
Honig finished with a game-high 24 points, netting 20 after the break. He dished out eight assists on the night, adding seven rebounds. Wixted recorded his fourth straight double-double, and sixth of the season, scoring 22 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Angradi drained a trio of three-pointers for nine points while senior Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) and Hinnenkamp each tallied six points. Hinnenkamp was strong on the boards as well, recording eight rebounds.
Gene Williams led the Blue Jays (7-7, 4-3) with 20 points while George Bugarinovic posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 12-2 overall and remain unbeaten in the Centennial Conference at 7-0. This marks the best start, in conference, in program history for Dickinson. The Red Devils travel to Haverford College on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm, following the women's game at 1:00 pm.
