(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson volleyball team had another solid outing but came up short, falling 3-1 to visiting McDaniel College on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils came out strong in the opening set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. They led 12-9 before the Green Terror made a run to pull even at 12-12.
The teams traded points down the stretch, playing to ties at 17,18,19,20 and 21. McDaniel tallied back-to-back points to lead 23-21 before the Devils answered. The Terror claimed the final two points to take the first set, 25-22.
The second set was similar at the start with McDaniel taking an early advantage, leading 8-5. The match was tied, 9-9, before a Green Terror run put the visitors in front, 17-9. The Red Devils pulled within 23-15 before dropping the set, 25-15.
The third set was close the entire way, with neither team taking more than a two-point advantage until the Devils gained a slight edge, 15-12. McDaniel battled back to tie the match at 17, and pulled in front, 22-19, forcing a Dickinson timeout.
The Green Terror scored another point, out of the timeout before the Red Devils rallied for six straight points to claim the set, 25-23, and extend the match.
The Red Devils held the lead in the early going of the fourth. McDaniel took a 12-9 and held a three-point advantage through most of the middle of the set. The Terror survived one of the best rallies of the night to take a 14-11 lead.
After the teams traded service errors, a kill down the line put McDaniel on top, 16-12. The Red Devils continued to challenge down the stretch, but could not catch the Green Terror as they secured the match, 25-20, in the fourth set.
Kloe Martin led McDaniel (17-4, 3-2 CC) with 19 kills while Colette Kellen and Maddie Moyer combined for 42 assists on the night.
Junior Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) led the Red Devils with 14 kills, adding nine digs. First-years Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and Gillian Chan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) each tallied 11 kills as well.
Sophomore Lauren Ahern (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) added seven kills, nine digs and a pair of aces in a great effort. Junior Jenn Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) dished out 43 assists while sophomore Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) recorded a match-high 22 digs.
The Red Devils (4-10, 0-4 CC) are on the road this weekend, traveling to Bryn Mawr College for a 1:00 pm match on Saturday.
