(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team jumped out to an early lead on Ursinus, but the Bears battled their way back for a 47-31 win on Saturday.
Junior running back Cedric Madden (Norristown, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) did all he could with a monster afternoon, rushing for 270 yards and three first-half touchdowns. Madden became the first Red Devil to rush for over 1,000 yards since 1992. His 1,174 yards rank him sixth on the school single-season list.
Madden put the Devils on the board with a 37-yard touchdown run on the game's first possession. The Bears answered with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter, scoring on a 25-yard pass from Kevin Monahan to Taylor Paul.
Madden sandwiched a pair of touchdown runs around a 21-yard field-goal from Adam Kaminski (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) to put Dickinson in front, 24-7. The Bears recovered a fumble on the Devils' three yard line with just 18 seconds to play in the half.
Monahan connected with Paul for the second time to cut the deficit to 24-14, at halftime. After the break, the teams traded punts before Paul scored on the ground to make the score, 24-20. Dickinson blocked the extra-point to keep it a four-point game.
Austin High (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) boomed a 50-yard punt to the Ursinus eight yard line.
The Bears escaped with a 72-yard pass to Darius Jones, who found pay-dirt to take the lead, 27-20. Following a Red Devil turnover, first-year Kevin Ioannidis (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central) returned an interception to the Ursinus 35 yard line.
Senior quarterback Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) hit junior Anders Overhaug (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) with a 29-yard touchdown strike to put Dickinson back on top, 31-27, just six seconds into the fourth quarter.
Taylor Paul scored again to cap a 55 yard drive and put the Bears back in front, 34-31. Ursinus capitalized on a turnover to stretch the lead to 40-31 after a missed extra-point.
Ahnell tossed a 13 yard pass to Madden and connected with classmate Eric Ondo (Richland, Pa./ELCO) for 16 yards to move the Devils into Ursinus territory. The Devils fumbled and the Bears recovered on the 13 yard line.
Monaham hit Jones for an 84-yard touchdown for the final score of 47-31.
Madden added 44 yards receiving to his 270 rushing yards for 314 all-purpose yards on the day. Ondo added three catches for 41 yards as Ahnell threw for 117. Lex Lauletta (Woodstock, Ga./Sequoyah) returned four kicks for 90 yards.
Pat Schlecker (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) and Teddy Airoldi (Bethlehem, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) each tallied eight solo tackles to lead the Red Devils.
Jake Myers (Middletown, Del./St. Andrews) and Ioannidis each finished with seven stops.
The teams combined for over 1,000 yards of offense on the day. Monahan completed 26 passes for 442 yards, including 263 to Jones. Paul rushed for 136 yards and caught seven passes for an addition 79 yards for the Bears.
Ursinus improved to 7-3 overall and 6-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils finish 3-7 overall and 3-6 in the CC.
