(Reading, Pa.) – The #5-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team rallied in the second half to close out the semester with a 71-64 win at Alvernia University, on Monday night. Senior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) moved into second on the school's all-time scoring list, netting 17 points on the night to raise his career total to 1,529.
Alex Shippen went 5-for-5 from the three-point line in the first half to give the host Crusaders a 35-22 lead at halftime. Back-to-back triples put the Crusaders in front, 17-7. Shippen drained his fifth at the five minute mark to put Alvernia up, 33-16.
The Red Devils capitalized on their height advantage in the second half, chipping away at the lead to cut the deficit to six in the opening five minutes.
Junior Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) drained a three-pointer from the corner and Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) drove to the basket and converted a three-point play to pull the Devils within four, 45-41.
Angradi drained another three after a blocked shot from Wixted to bring the Devils within one. He dropped his third straight on the next possession to give Dickinson the lead, 47-45, with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
Hinnenkamp drove in again and was fouled. He hit one free throw before back-to-back field-goals put Alvernia back in front, 49-48.
Two free throws from Hinnenkamp put Dickinson back on top with 9:29 to play. First-year Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Convenant Day) tipped-in a rebound to stretch the lead to 52-49.
Angradi continued to lead the charge, converting a pair of free throws and sinking another jumper to extend the margin to 56-49. Alvernia finally countered before sending Angradi back to the line on the other end. He sank both for a 58-51 advantage with just under six minutes to play in the game.
Wixted picked up his fourth foul as Harrison Deyo Converted a three-point play to pull the Crusaders within four. Wixted hit a jumper and the Devils called timeout, leading 60-54.
Deyo put-back a miss but fouled out on the other end, called for a hold on Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./LaSalle College), who hit a pair of free throws.
The Crusaders hit one-of-two free throws and returned to the line after being fouled after a steal. Alex Shippen sank both to cut the margin to 62-59. Collins finished an easy lay-up off an assist from Hinnenkamp, and the Devils held on the defensive end.
Collins returned the favor, feeding Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) for 66-59 advantage. The Devils held on two possessions before Charles Cooper banged a three-pointer at the 1:40 mark.
Cox finished a solid four-corner offense with a lay-up to extend the lead back to six, 68-62, at the one minute mark. Cox pulled the rebound on the other end, but the Crusaders came up with a steal and scored with 30 seconds to play.
Angradi went to the line, hitting both free throws, and a long three-pointer rebounded into the hands of Cox. Angradi would tack-on another free throw for the final of 71-64.
Angradi scored a team-high 20 points, hitting 5-of-7 shots, including 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. He went 7-of-8 from the free throw line, grabbing three rebounds.
Wixted tallied 17 points on the night, recording a double-double with 10 points, adding three assists, two blocked shots and a pair of steals. Hinnenkamp finished with 12 points, four assists and a pair of steals. Melton added nine points and six rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 9-1 on the season. They return to action on January 3rd, traveling to York College of New York for a 3:00 pm tip-off.
