Wixted Nets 27 to Tame Bears 81-76

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team held off a tenacious effort by Ursinus for an 81-76 win on Saturday at the Kline Center.

 

Sophomore Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) opened the game with a three-pointer and the Red Devils jumped out to a 13-6 lead at the 16:30 mark.

 

The Bears cut the lead to one before the Devils answered to lead 22-16, with 12:18 remaining in the half. Pat Vasturia led another Bear run, cutting the deficit to one at the 10:19 mark.

 

Junior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored on three straight possessions, and with strong play from Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) gave Dickinson its biggest lead of the half. The Red Devils stretched the margin to eight.

 

After trading field-goals, Steve Leonard would knock-down a trio of three-pointers and Jesse Krasna gave Ursinus the lead with two free throws at the 2:30 mark. Landy and Angradi sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Krasna lay-up to hold a 47-44 advantage at the break.

 

The game continued to be a dogfight in the second half. The Bears were able to pull even, but could not take the lead. Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) assisted a Wixted lay-up and scored himself to give the Devils a 63-56 lead with 10:35 remaining.

 

Ryan Adams tied the game with a pair of free throws, but junior Pete Yingst (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) answered with a three-pointer. Adams hit a jumper, followed by an Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) three-pointer to make the score, 69-65.

 

Cox hit two free throws and Vasturia buried a three and was fouled, cutting the deficit to 71-69, with 3:31 to play. Wixted converted a three-point play on the other end for a five point advantage.

 

Malik Draper came up big for the Bears, hitting a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to tie the game with two minutes left in regulation. Honig drove to the basket for a lay-up and Ursinus committed an offensive foul.

 

Honig fired a beautiful pass to Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) for a key basket with one minute to play. Krasna hit two free throws but Landy answered with a big three-pointer for the final of 81-76.

 

Wixted led the way with a game-high 27 points, hitting 11-of-13 shots from the field and 4-of-5 from the line. Honig finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, knocking down four three-pointers.

 

Landy tallied 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals on the afternoon. Cox added eight points, eight rebounds and three assists. Tom McInerney (York, Pa./York Suburban) chipped in with six points, five rebounds and three assists. Hinnenkamp tallied five points, three rebounds and three assists.

 

Adam led Ursinus (3-18, 1-13) with 20 points, five rebounds and a pair of steals. Draper scored 15 points and made five steals.

 

The Red Devils improve to 17-4 overall and 12-2 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Wednesday, hosting McDaniel College at 8:00 pm.
