(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's soccer team enjoyed a strong start to the 2014 season, topping the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, 5-0, on Friday afternoon.
Junior Erin Sutphen (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) led the charge with a goal and two assists while senior Allie Young (New Canaan, Conn./St. Luke's) struck twice, netting the game-winner, 26 minutes into the match.
Young broke through the defense and put the Devils on the board before junior Jenna Lamb (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary) finished a nice give-and-go with Sutphen, just over a minute later.
Lamb would return the favor in the 32nd minute, serving a well-placed cross to Sutphen, who finished with a beautiful header to put Dickinson in front, 3-0.
Young found the net for the second time, following a rocket off the foot of Sutphen, adding her second assist on the day. Bobcat goalkeeper Shannon Edwards turned away a pair of shots before Young struck again, making a great save on the blast by Sutphen.
First-year Andrea Caya (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) created some strong scoring chances in the first half, and finally beat Edwards for her first collegiate goal in the 83rd minute. Classmate Caroline Price (Allenhurst, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) picked-up the assist, threading a nice pass to set up Caya.
The Devils rattled off 33 shots in the first half adding 16 after the break. Edwards played outstanding in the nets, despite the goals, turning away a remarkable 26 shots in a valiant effort.
Dickinson held the Bobcats to just a pair of shots as a trio of goalkeepers shared the shutout. Junior Charlotte Armour (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary) earned the start and played the first half. Sophomore Deanna Ballard (Smithtown, N.Y./Monticello, Va.) and first-year Amanda Masterson (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) split time in the second to keep the slate clean.
The Red Devils start the season 1-0. They are in action again on Saturday, traveling to St. Vincent for a 4:00 pm kick-off.
