(Altoona, Pa.) – The Dickinson volleyball team suffered and 3-0 setback at Penn State Altoona on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions pulled in front in the opening set with a 10-2 run to break a 5-5 tie. Penn State scored four straight points in three separate clips to lead 18-8. The Devils tried to claw their way back before falling, 25-13.
The teams were tied at 5-5, once again in the second set. Penn State built a 16-10 lead. Three straight errors allowed the Devils to cut the deficit to four at 18-14. Emily Frye went on the attack for the hosts to help close out the second set, 25-17.
The Devils scored the first point of the final set before Altoona answered to lead, 5-2. They were able to string together points with small runs to finish the match with a 25-15 decision.
First-year Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) led the Devils at the net with six kills and a pair of blocks. Classmate Emily Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) recorded a match-high 12 digs, adding three kills on the day.
Junior Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) added four kills while Jenn Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) tallied 20 assists.
Kristi Batzel led the Lions (2-9) with 32 assists, feeding Kaylin Dunn and Amanda Hammer for nine kills each.
The Red Devils slip to 2-6 overall. They travel to Albright College on Thursday night for a 7:00 pm start.
