Greyhounds Rally to Overtake Devils 21-14

Box Score

(Bethlehem, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team jumped out to an early lead on Moravian, but the Greyhounds would rally, scoring twice in the third quarter to overtake the Devils for a 21-14 win on Saturday.

Junior Austin High (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) pinned the Greyhounds deep in the their own territory, dropping in a 54 yard punt on the eight yard line for Moravian's opening drive. The Red Devil defense held, setting up a blocked punt for the second straight week.

Senior Devin Gaby (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) made the block, into the hands of sophomore Ned Emala (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) who recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown at the 11:24 mark.

The Red Devil defense held again the next possession, forcing a Moravian punt to the Dickinson 26 yard line. Senior quarterback Cole Ahnell (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) capped a nine-play, 74 yard drive with a 48 yard scoring strike to senior Eric Ondo (Richland, Pa./ELCO) to put the Devils on top, 14-0, with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter.

Chris Negron carried the ball six times on the next drive for Moravian, setting up a 23 yard touchdown pass from Mike Hayes to Jalen Snyder-Scipio, with three minutes to play in the first.

The teams traded punts through most of the second quarter. Hayes went for the end zone in the closing seconds, but senior cornerback Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) was there to make an interception on the Devils' own five yard line.

Dickinson would take a knee, heading into halftime with a 14-7 lead. Moravian tied the game on their opening possession of the second half, using an eight-play, 72 yard drive. Hayes connected with Will McLaughlin for a 26 yard touchdown pass to pull the Greyhounds even.

Moravian would take the lead after the Greyhounds forced Dickinson to punt. Hayes found another receiver for his third touchdown pass of the day, finding Liam Nolan from 43 yards out to give the hosts a 21-14 advantage with 7:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Senior Mark Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) tried to recreate some of the magic from homecoming weekend, blocking and recovering a punt on the Moravian 16 yard line.

The Greyhound defense came up big as Ed Buoye intercepted a pass at the two yard line and returned it to the 22 to stall the Dickinson drive.

The Red Devils put together a strong drive in the fourth quarter as they looked to pull even. The Devils went 69 yards on 19 plays but Moravian held on once more, intercepting a pass in the end zone with 4:30 remaining in the game.

The Greyhounds burned all but 16 seconds off the clock before turning the ball over on downs at the Dickinson 39 yard line. They would tally their third interception of the day to close out the game as Noah Miller came away with the pick to secure the win for Moravian.

Junior running back Cedric Madden (Norristown, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) was just shy of the century mark, rushing for 99 yards on the day. Ahnell ran for 35 yards and completed 12-of-29 passes for 136 yards.

Ondo finished with 62 yards receiving on three catches, including the 48 yard touchdown strike.

Junior Teddy Airoldi (Bethlehem, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) led the defense with a game-high 13 tackles while classmate Jake Myers (Middletown, Del./St. Andrew's) tallied 11 stops. Manganaro added nine tackles to his blocked punt. Walker Moriarty (Snowmass Village, Colo./Aspen) added an 11-yard sack.

High averaged 42.2 yards on six punts, dropping three inside the 20 yard line.

Hayes led Moravian with 151 yards passing while Negron ran for a game-high 124 yards. Kevin Bracken anchored the defensive effort with 12 tackles.

The Red Devils slip to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home for a big rivalry game next weekend, hosting Franklin & Marshall for possession of the Conestoga Wagon Trophy. Opening kick-off is set for 1:00 pm.
