(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #7-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team erupted for an 81-48 win over #14-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday night. The game featured the highest ranking match-up in Centennial Conference history, and the fifth time two top-25 teams have squared-off in Centennial action.
The game started out as many would expect as the teams played to an 8-8 tie in the opening five minutes. Junior Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) got ahead of the field for a pair of lay-ups to give the Red Devils a 14-9 advantage at the 10:38 mark.
The Diplomats cut the deficit to one before a pair of three-pointers from first-year Chris McNeal (Collegeville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and junior Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), and a lay-up from Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) put Dickinson up, 25-16, with 5:37 remaining in the half.
Angradi knocked-down two more three-pointers to close out the half with the Red Devils on top, 36-25.
F&M scored two quick baskets to start the second half before Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) converted a three-point play to stretch the lead back to double-figures. The Red Devils looked to be pulling away as senior Pete Yingst (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) buried a three-pointer to extend the margin to 15.
Brandon Federici started to get hot for F&M, pulling the Diplomats to within five at the 11:18 mark. Cox ignited the crowd with a one-hand jam to trigger a remarkable 36-8 run over the final 11 minutes.
Wixted went to work in the paint and joined Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) on back-to-back three-pointers to stretch the lead to 17. Angradi connected on back-to-back triples and Cox turned a steal into another thundering dunk to force a timeout with Dickinson on top, 67-43, with 6:24 remaining in the game.
The Red Devils continued to build on the lead over the final five minutes as six different players would score for the Red Devils for the final of 81-48.
Angradi finished with five three-pointers for a team-high 17 points while Wixted was literally all over the floor, scoring 14 points to go with seven rebounds, five blocked shots and a pair of steals.
Cox reached double-figures with 10 points featuring two slam dunks, adding four rebounds and a pair of assists. Hinnenkamp tallied nine points, four rebounds and a pair of assists while Collins controlled seven rebounds to go with five points on the night. First-year Robert Picka (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) chipped in with seven points and four rebounds.
Morgan Lee led Franklin & Marshall (14-2, 7-2) with a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds while Cedric Moune grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Federici tallied 16 points after the Red Devils held him to just four in the first half and 5-of-18 shooting on the night.
The Red Devils improve to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
