Wixted Sets CC Free Throw Mark in Red Devil Win

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #7-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team held visiting Swarthmore to just 18 percent shooting and 11 points in the first half, en route to a 72-45 win on Saturday at the Kline Center.

 

Senior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) became the Centennial Conference's all-time leader in free throws made, going 6-for-8 from the line to raise his career total to 512. He scored first, putting the Red Devils on the board with a three-pointer in the opening minute of the game.

 

The Red Devils jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, following another three-pointer and a lay-up from Wixted, and a three-pointer from Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley).

 

Matt Brennan hit a three-pointer at the 12:48 mark before the Red Devils answered with a 10-2 run to stretch the margin to 23-9, at the 7:04 mark. Senior Pete Yingst (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) triggered the run with a three-pointer and junior Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) closed out the stint with a three-point play.

 

Dickinson held Swarthmore scoreless over the final 6:36 of the first half, taking a 32-11 lead into the break. Yingst buried another three-pointer and scored on a nifty lay-up to close out the half.

 

The Garnet turned in a solid performance in the second half, playing relatively even while the Red Devils remained in control throughout the game. Wixted came out strong and Yingst hit his third three-pointer of the game to put Dickinson up by 24 at the midpoint of the half.

 

Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) knocked-down a three-pointer and Angradi dished an assist to Hinnenkamp before hitting a three-pointer to make the score, 69-42, with 3:35 to play.

 

First-year Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) closed things out with a three-point play, scoring off a steal by Rob Picka (Cockeysville, Pa./Dulaney), for the final of 72-45.

 

Four Red Devils reached double-figures on the afternoon. Wixted led the way with a double-double, scoring 18 points and controlling 12 rebounds to go with four steals. Angradi finished with 13 points and Yingst tallied 11 as they each knocked-down a trio of three-pointers. Hinnenkamp hit 4-of-6 shots from the field for 10 points and first-year Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) controlled seven rebounds, adding four points and two assists.

 

Zack Yonda led Swarthmore (7-10, 3-7 CC) with 10 points and five rebounds. Andrew Kaufman added eight points on the afternoon.

 

The #7-ranked Red Devils improve to 15-2 overall and 8-2 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Muhlenberg College on Tuesday night for a 7:30 pm tip-off with the Mules.
