(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #5-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team overcame a two-point deficit at halftime to post a 90-78 victory at Muhlenberg College on Tuesday night. The Red Devils improve to 16-2 overall and 9-2 in the Centennial Conference.
The Red Devils jumped out to a quick start behind a three-pointer from Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) and five points by Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, Pa./Camden Catholic). Junior Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) put the Devils up, 10-2, in the opening three minutes.
Muhlenberg scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 10-7 before Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) and Wixted knocked down back-to-back three-pointers for a 16-7 advantage.
The Mules worked their way back to within three at the midpoint of the first half. Jon Schreer tied the game with a three-pointer at the 7:06 mark and Nick Rindock put Muhlenberg in front, under a minute later.
The teams traded baskets over the final five minutes of the half. Wixted hit four free throws while Angraid and senior guard Pete Yingst (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) both drained three-pointers to keep the game close. Muhlenberg went into halftime with a 44-42 advantage.
The Mules capitalized on a quick start to open the second, quickly stretching the lead to seven, 49-42, before the Red Devils went to the long ball. Collins knocked down back-to-back triples and first-year Robert Picka (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) hit a free throw to tie the game at 49.
That triggered an 11-0 run for Dickinson. Lay-ups from Picka and Hinnenkamp, and another three-pointer from Angradi put the Devils in front by nine, with 15:09 remaining. The teams traded baskets until Hinnenkamp scored and then fed Wixted to stretch the margin to double-figures at the 12:07 mark.
Muhlenberg continued to battle, cutting the deficit to just five, with 5:40 remaining in the game. Angradi connected on his fourth three-pointer of the game and the Devils would hold the lead with solid free throw shooting down the stretch.
The Red Devils went 9-for-10 from the stripe with Hinnenkamp sinking 5-of-6 in the final two minutes.
Wixted led the way with 24 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. He hit 8-of-11 shots from the field and was perfect from the line, going 5-for-5. Hinnenkamp was perfect from the field, hitting 6-of-6 shots and finished 6-for-8 from the line for 18 points. He added seven assists and five rebounds as well.
Angradi drained four three-pointers for and four free throws for 16 points while Collins reached double-figures as well with 11 points to go with eight rebounds. Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) turned in an all-around game, adding seven points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Picka tallied nine points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Rindock led Muhlenberg (8-10, 3-8) with 19 points, six rebounds and a game-high 10 assists.
The #5-ranked Red Devils improve to 16-2 overall and 9-2 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Washington College on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
