Late Goal Leads Bullets to 1-0 Win

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday afternoon as visiting Gettysburg scored with just 3:13 remaining in regulation for a 1-0, Centennial Conference win.

The Red Devils had a great chance early as first-year Briona Davis (Franklin Park, N.J./Franklin) beat the defense at the top of the 18, but her shot was just wide of the post.

The teams traded possessions as the match was evenly played in the midfield. Gettysburg managed to generate more shots, but the Red Devils continued to generate chances as well.

Senior Charlotte Armour (New Haven, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) was solid in the nets, turning away six shots in the first half.

The Bullets came out on the offensive in the second half as Hannah Theurer fired off a pair of shots in opening two minutes. The Devils countered with a corner on the other end, resulting in a save by Eliza Gray, off a shot from senior Jenna Lamb (Fairfax, Va./Robinson Secondary).

Dickinson kept pressing, forcing Gray to make six saves in the second half. The Bullets only put four shots on goal, but one would find its way in, late in the match. Lauren Shapiro received a nice lead pass from Theurer, giving the senior midfielder a great look at the top of the area. Shapiro hit a solid shot into the upper corner of the net for the lone goal of the game.

The Devils kept battling until the final whistle. Lamb had a late shot that went wide and senior Erin Sutphen (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) had a great chance on a header in the final seconds but Gray came away with the save to secure the win.

The Bullets held a 17-10 advantage in shots while Dickinson held the edge in corners, 5-1. Gray finished with six saves as Gettysburg improves to 6-2-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

The Red Devils slip to 6-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in conference play. They travel to Washington College on Saturday for a 1:00 pm start.
