(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team celebrated senior night with a big Centennial Conference win, topping visiting Gettysburg College, 6-1, in a key match-up on Saturday evening at Miller Memorial Field.
The Bullets struck first, scoring in the 10th minute. Henry Smith finished on a bang-bang play, with assists from Patrick Santini and KJ DePontes.
The Red Devils countered as sophomore Will Bracken (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) scored twice in a span of just one minute, 12 seconds to put Dickinson on top, 2-1, with 13:18 remaining in the half.
Senior Jonathan Harper (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) served a corner to the head of Macsen Pritchard (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep), who's shot was saved, but right to the head of Bracken for the goal.
The Red Devils held the advantage in shots, 12-5, putting seven shots on the net to force Max Karen to make seven saves in the first half.
After the break, the Red Devils carried the momentum into the second half, erupting with four more goals as they dominated play for the majority of the time. The Bullets continued to challenge and built some strong chances, but senior goaltender Jacob Schreer (Towaco, N.J./Morristown Beard) turned away everything on net to finish with five saves on the night.
Junior Austin Thames (Frederick, Md./Urbana) gave Dickinson a big insurance goal as he carried the ball unmarked across the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot into the upper right corner for a 3-1 advantage, with 33:23 remaining in the game.
That goal gave the Devils a lot of confidence as they began to possess the ball and continued to create strong scoring opportunities.
Senior Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy) fed a beautiful through ball to a streaking Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) on the right side. Edmonds collected the pass and ripped a shot off the keeper to stretch the margin to 4-1, with 26 minutes to play.
Braeden Kelly (Brookville, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) celebrated senior night, scoring off a corner to extend the lead to 5-1 in the 82nd minute. Harper served another dangerous ball that was redirected off the post by junior Danny Sheppard (Rydal, Pa./Abington), right to a waiting Kelly, who finished the goal.
Harper would later connect with senior classmate Ned Wagner (Washington, D.C./Upper Canada College) on a free-kick to close out the scoring for the night. Harper tallied the 14th assist of his career to move him just outside the career top 10 list.
Hylton-Dei's assist was the 15th of his career, moving him into a tie for the number eight spot in program history.
Karen finished with seven saves on the night as Gettysburg slips to 8-4-1 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The Red Devils improve to 9-3-2 overall and earn key points in the conference as they move to 3-1-2. The Red Devils are off mid-week before traveling to Swarthmore College for another big match-up, next Saturday at 7:00 pm.
