(Collegeville, Pa.) – Ursinus College gave Dickinson all it could handle, but the Red Devils (8-14, 2-6 Centennial) swept the Bears, 3-0, (5-17, 0-9 Centennial) in Centennial Conference volleyball action on Saturday morning.
Ursinus pushed the first set to extra points, before Dickinson closed it out, 26-24. The Red Devils would take the second set 25-19 and then rally from behind to win the third set and the match, 25-20.
In the first set, Dickinson took a 6-1 lead before Ursinus rallied to get within two at 6-4 on a kill by Thiele and two Dickinson errors. The Red Devils would build the lead back up to 11-6, before Ursinus again rallied within two at 11-9.
Ursinus would pull even at 13-all on a kill by Karla Thiele and would pull even several times, eventually tying the match 22-22. The Bears had set point at 24-23 when the Red Devils were called for an attack error. However, two straight kills and a service ace by Kelly Quinn (Madison, N.J./Madison) gave the Red Devils set one.
In set two, Ursinus would take a late lead at 18-17, before the Red Devils closed the set on an 8-1 run to win 25-19. In set three, Ursinus raced out to an 8-3 lead paced by kills from senior Kathryn Yoo, sophomore Jackie Jordan and a service ace by Thiele.
Dickinson would rally and took its first lead at 12-11 on a kill by Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield). Dickinson would go up 18-13, before Ursinus scored five straight points, tying the score at 18-18. Dickinson closed the set, and the match, outscoring the Bears 7-2 to claim the match.
Thiele led the Bears with a match-high 11 kills, while sophomore Allison Raff added eight. Junior Emily van Mulbregt had 26 assists, while defensively, Thiele had 15 digs and Raff had 14.
Sophomore Gillian Chan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) tallied nine kills to lead the Red Devil attack while both sophomores Beecher and Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) each added six.
Quinn had 13 assists while first-year Hannah Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) handed out 11 to go with three aces. Junior Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley recorded a match-high 20 digs, adding three assists and three service aces. Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) each reached double-figures with 10 digs as well.
The Red Devils return home to face Johns Hopkins on Tuesday in a match rescheduled from last week. They travel to Elizabethtown on Wednesday before closing out the regular season at home against Franklin & Marshall on the 31st.
