(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team battled visiting Johns Hopkins, tooth and nail on Wednesday night, but suffered a 3-1 setback to the Blue Jays.
The first set was within two points for almost the entire way before the Blue Jays pulled away at the end, 25-21. The second set had a similar start before the Red Devils gained a 13-9 advantage, forcing a Hopkins timeout.
Dickinson built the lead to 18-10, but the Blue Jays would answer, cutting the deficit to 22-20. The Devils held on, claiming the second by an identical score, 25-21.
Hopkins looked to use that formula in the third, gaining a little separation at 18-13. The Devils rallied to pull within two at 21-19, and kept fighting to run the scored to 24-23 before the Blue Jays closed out the set, 25-23.
A strong 8-2 start in the fourth set led to a quick timeout by Dickinson. The Blue Jays had found a rhythm, however, and would capture the match with a 25-10 decision.
Elizabeth Wuerstle led the Blue Jays with 10 kills while Erica Johnston added eight. Setter Kristi Rhead handed out 34 assists on the night as Hopkins improves to 10-9 overall and 8-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Sophomore Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) led the Devil attack with 10 kills while senior Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) added seven kills and recorded 11 digs. Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) tallied seven kills and four digs.
Junior libero Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) recorded a match-high 16 digs while sophomore Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) picked-up eight. First-year setter Hannah Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) handed out 13 assists while sophomore Kelly Quinn (Madison, N.J./Madison) dished out 12.
The Red Devils slip to 8-15 overall and 2-7 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Franklin & Marshall at 1:00 pm.
