(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team played a great third set to force a fourth but suffered a 3-1 setback to host McDaniel College, on Wednesday night.
The Green Terror opened the match with a 25-17 decision in the first set, but had their work cut out for them with strong opposition from the Red Devils. McDaniel took an early lead, jumping out to a 4-0 start and building a 9-4 lead.
Dickinson answered with 6-1 run to tie the match, 10-10. Attack errors gave the Terror a 15-10 advantage, stretching the lead to 23-15. The Devils capitalized on a couple of McDaniel errors and senior Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) put down a kill to force a timeout, cutting the deficit to 17-15.
The second set followed a similar pattern with the hosts breaking a 4-4 tie to pull in front, 10-4. Dickinson trailed just 10-7 and 14-10 before a Green Terror run gave them a 20-11 edge, en route to a 25-13 decision.
The Red Devils made a stand in the third set, trailing just once at 9-6. Back-to-back service aces from Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) capped a 4-0 run, putting Dickinson on top, 10-9. They extend the margin to 16-11, but McDaniel kept battling, tying the match at 19. Misrok added another ace and the Devils held on for a 25-23 win, forcing a fourth set.
The Green Terror came out strong in the fourth, scoring the first five points. Smith tallied a pair of kills before another run put McDaniel in front, 13-3. The Devils traded points throughout the remainder of the set, but just couldn't closet the gap, falling 25-13.
The Devils tallied a match-high 16 kills in the third set, finishing with 41 on the night. Smith tallied a match-high 13 kills, adding a pair of aces and three blocks assists. Misrok added 24 digs to her three aces while first-year setter Hannah Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) recording 27 assists and nine digs.
Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) each added seven kills with Bongo picking up seven digs. Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) chipped in with six kills. Gillian Chan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) assisted on four blocks to go with three kills. Kelly Quinn (Madison, N.J./Madison) handed out eight assists as well.
McDaniel improves to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 6-12 overall and 0-4 in the CC. They return home to face Bryn Mawr College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
