(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #21-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team overcame a big, second half deficit to catch Cabrini, but the Cavaliers held on to win the season opener for both teams, 87-82, on Saturday night at the Kline Center.
Cabrini jumped out to an early 15-2 lead after Ivan Robinson opened the game with a three-pointer and a lay-up. The Red Devils settled in and cut the lead to eight, 21-13, with 8:32 remaining in the half.
The teams traded baskets before the Devils looked to close the gap before the break. Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) converted a three-point play to pull the Devils within five at the 4:55 mark. The Devils would get as close as four on an Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) lay-up before the Cavaliers scored twice to end the half, leading 41-38.
Senior Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley banged a pair of three-pointers to start the second half, but Cabrini went on a run, taking a 63-44 lead on a Jair Green three-pointer.
The Devils trailed by 19 at the midpoint of the half, but would make a run of their own. Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) started things off with a lay-up and an assist. Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) finished a three-point play off an assist from Romocki and Hinnenkamp scored off a Romocki steal to cut the lead to single digits.
Hinnenkamp cut the lead to six with a three-point play at the 5:03 mark. The Devils kept coming as first-year Jule Brown (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Marion) dished an assist to Melton and hit a pair of free throws. Hinnenkamp knocked-down a jumper and Wright pulled Dickinson even, with 2:35 to play in the game.
Cabrini hit a pair of free throws before Hinnenkamp fed Melton to knot the game at 80. The Cavaliers built a four point lead with Angradi hitting two free throws to make it a field-goal. Cabrini would hold on down the stretch, hitting two free throws with two seconds to play for the final of 87-82.
Robinson led all scorers with 25 points and three steals. Tyheim Monroe recorded a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 5-of-7 free throws for Cabrini.
Hinnenkamp lead the Devils with a double-double, scoring 21 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He was perfect from the line, going 5-for-5. Melton finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the floor.
Brown reached double-figures with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, adding 5-of-6 free throws.
The Red Devils travel to Stevenson University next weekend for the Hoopsville Classic. They face the host Mustangs on Friday night at 6:00 pm and take on St. John Fisher on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
