(Williamsport, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Soccer Championship with a thrilling, 2-1, overtime win over Rowan University on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils struck first with a Massachusetts connection as sophomore Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) found senior Jonathan Harper (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) on the far post as Harper put Dickinson on the board in the 57th minute.
Rowan tallied a late goal, scoring on a counter as Travis Ward finished with assists from Shane Kohler and Kyle Dennis to force overtime with just 2:24 remaining in regulation.
The Red Devils capitalized on a corner at the midpoint of the first overtime. Sophomore Will Bracken (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) put the ball in the back of the net in the 96th minute to send the Red Devils into the second round.
The game saw a lot of offense as Rowan held the advantage in shots, 20-14, and had a slim edge in corners, 5-4. Both goalkeepers were tested in the second half, combining for 10 saves in the period.
Kyle Davis added a save in overtime to finish with seven on the day for the Profs. Junior Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Sebastian's Prep) turned away one shot in the first half and tallied six saves in the second to record seven as well.
Rowan ends its season with an overall record of 16-6. The Red Devils improve to 13-4-3 on the year. They move on to Sunday's second round match-up to face host Lycoming College at 1:00 pm. The Warriors capitalized on a corner as well, scoring the game-winner in the 63rd minute.
The Red Devils broke into the national rankings this week, earning the #21 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, and a #24 ranking by D3soccer.com.
