(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team rallied from a 21-2 deficit and almost overtook visiting Ursinus College on Saturday, but dropped a heartbreaker, 28-20, in the season finale at Biddle Field.

The Bears drained just under eight minutes off the clock in their opening drive, covering 78 yards on 14 plays. James Emmett dove in from inside the one on a quarterback sneak at the 4:33 mark of the first quarter.

The Bears forced a punt and took over at their own 46 yard line. One play later Emmett connected with Asa Manley for a 54 yard touchdown pass and a quick, 14-0 advantage for Ursinus.

Dickinson looked to answer, moving the ball to the Ursinus 22 yard line. A good attempt in a strong wind sent first-year Stephen Walker's (Darien, Conn./Darien) field-goal off the left upright. The ball almost bounced through but spin back to keep the score at 14-0.

Senior Austin High (Wilmington, Del./Archmere) pinned the Bears on their own six yard line with a 47 yard punt. Kevin Sherry (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) sacked Emmett in the end zone, forcing an intentional grounding for a safety.

Ursinus held on fourth down but gave the ball back on an interception by senior Mark Manganaro (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) at the Dickinson 20 yard line.

The Devils would return the favor with a fumble and Ursinus stretched the lead to 21-2 on an 18 yard pass with 38 seconds remaining in the half.

Dickinson wasn't quite done yet as first-year Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) hit Anders Overhaug (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) with a 27 yard pass and connected with James Ward (Hatfield, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) for a seven yard strike to move the ball to the 32 yard line.

That set the stage for a remarkable, 49 yard field-goal by Walker to end the half and make it a two-possession game at the break.

Dickinson capitalized on a big, roughing the kicker penalty to score on its opening drive of the second half. Senior Cedric Madden (Norristown, Pa./Chestnut Hill) was unstoppable on the drive, covering 30 yards on six carries, finding pay-dirt at the 8:19 mark. The Devils went for two but could not get in, trailing 21-11.

The Devils chipped away to start the fourth quarter with a 23 yard field-goal from Walker at the 13:33 mark. Senior Jake Myers (Middletown, Del./St. Andrew's) intercepted Emmett to give the Devils the ball at the end of the third.

The Devils forced a punt and went 76 yards on 12 plays to pull within one as Burger hit Overhaug with a 24 yard touchdown pass. The extra-point failed, keeping the Devils behind, 21-20.

Ursinus answered with a 70 yard drive, scoring with 2:40 remaining to take a 28-20 lead. The Red Devils went for it on fourth down but were unable to convert and Ursinus would run out the clock for the win.

Myers had a monster game, making 15 tackles, adding a huge sack and the interception. Pat Schlecker (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) tallied 11 tackles and Teddy Airoldi (Bethlehem, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) reached double-figures with 10.

Sherry tallied five tackles and a sack, adding a pair of big pass break-ups on the day. Aturo Adkins (Canton, Mass./St. Sebastian's) recorded a big 10 yard sack.

On the offensive side, Overhaug caught nine passes for 165 yards. Madden rushed for 97 yards and Chris Soulas (Far Hills, N.J./Delbarton) broke for a 19 yard run before leaving with an injury.

Burger completed 14-of 26 passes for 189 yards while High averaged 42.2 yards on four punts.

The Red Devils finished the season 3-7 overall and 3-6 in the Centennial Conference.
