Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team overcame a quick start by visiting Catholic University, but just couldn't pull even, falling 81-71 on Friday night at the Kline Center.
The Cardinals hit their first four shots to jump out to a 10-3 lead and pulled in front, 17-6, in the opening five minutes.
Catholic held a double-digit lead for the most of the remainder of the half, but the Red Devils were able to trade baskets to keep the Cardinals in striking distance. After a pair of Bryson Fonville free throws that stretched the lead to 17, Dickinson made a run to cut the deficit to nine.
The Red Devils strung together an 8-0 run behind three straight lay-ups from Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day), making the score, 42-33, with 1:50 remaining in the half. The Cardinals sandwiched four free throws around another tip-in by Melton to give Catholic a 46-35 advantage at the break.
The lead fluctuated between 13 and 11 points for the opening five minutes of the second half. The tide looked to turn as the Devils drew the third and fourth fouls on Fonville at the 13:55 mark, sending the senior to the bench.
Dickinson looked to capitalize, cutting the lead to just six, with 11:54 remaining in the game. Senior Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) hit back-to-back field-goals and fed Melton for a lay-up to pull the Devils within, 60-54.
Catholic countered with a 10-0 run to build the lead again, extending the margin to 73-54, with 4:30 on the clock. The Red Devils continued to battle, chipping away at the lead one more time, closing the gap to 10 at the end.
Jon Stenger (Midlothian, Va./James River) led the way during the run, scoring back-to-back lay-ups and knocking down a three-pointer in the final seconds.
Fonville led Catholic with a game-high 28 points, hitting 12-of-14 free throws while handing out four assists. Corey Stanford added 20 points as the Cardinals improve to 6-3 on the season.
Melton led the way for Dickinson, scoring 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He added eight rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) tallied nine points and six assists while Hinnenkamp added nine points and four assists.
Robert Picka (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) came on to record eight points, four rebounds and a pair of assists. Stenger tallied eight points, as did Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) and Jule Brown (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion).
The Red Devils slip to 2-5 on the season. They travel to North Carolina at the end of the month to face Greensboro College and Guilford, at Guildford on December 29th and 30th.
