(Westminster, Md.) – The #9-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team suffered a second tough setback, falling on the road at McDaniel College, 78-73, on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 5-0 start before the Green Terror went on a 10-0 run capped by a pair of three-pointers from Andrew Merlo.
Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) countered to break up the run. Tim Stewart stretched the lead back to five and Merlo hit another three-pointer to put McDaniel up, 15-7, with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half.
Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) hit a baseline jumper and Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) finished an assist from Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) to trigger a run for the Devils. Angradi pulled Dickinson within one, sinking a three-pointer from the corner.
McDaniel pulled in front, 23-16. Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) fed Robert Picka (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) for an easy lay-up.
Wes Brooks hit the Terror's fifth three-pointer, making the score 26-18, at the six minute mark. Tim Stewart picked-up his second foul and went to the bench. Wixted drew a second and third foul on Kevin Irizarry, converting a pair of three-point plays to pull Dickinson within four, 28-24.
Merlo banged his fourth triple of the game for McDaniel. Wixted went to the line once again, hitting two more free throws. He fed a nice pass to Collins to bring the Devils within three.
Cam Royster answered with a three-point play, putting the Terror on top, 34-28, with three minutes to play. Angradi scored on a reverse lay-up but Merlo came back in the other end and dropped his fifth three-pointer.
The Terror scored at the buzzer to lead, 39-31, at the break. Wixted and Angradi each scored 12 points, shooting over 52 percent from the field in the first half.
McDaniel came out in a zone and Cox scored a quick lay-up. The Terror went on a 6-0 run to stretch the lead to 12, just 2:17 into the second half.
Angradi knocked down a three-pointer but the Terror stretched the lead to 50-36. Wixted made a strong move in the paint and came up with a big rebound on the defensive end. Cox capitalized with a nice reverse lay-up to pull Dickinson within 10.
Angradi pulled up for a three-pointer on the fast break and was fouled. He made all three free throws to cut the deficit to seven. Wixted grabbed a rebound and found Hinnenkamp on the outlet, leading to a lay-up and a foul. He drained the free throw to pull the Devils within six.
A halfcourt trap led to a McDaniel turnover. Hinnenkamp pulled down an offensive rebound and was fouled once again. He hit one-of-two to make it a three-point game and put back another tip-in to cut it to one.
Stewart stopped the Devil run with a pair of free throws, and made a steal. Wixted traded field-goals with the Terror and Angradi hit a three-pointer to tie the game, 54-54.
McDaniel scored back-to-back before Wixted countered with a three-point play to trail by one. Angradi put Dickinson in front, hitting a three from the corner at the eight minute mark.
Wes Brooks gave McDaniel a 66-61 lead with a pair of three-pointers. Phil Perry stretched it to seven with a steal and lay-up. Wixted scored to make it, 68-63, with 3:53 remaining in the game.
McDaniel scored back-to-back with a steal from Duane Echols. Wixted added a pair of free throws to pull Dickinson within seven, 72-65.
Wixted and Merlo traded free throws and the Devils went right back to Wixted, who hit a baby hook, cutting the deficit to 73-68. Echols hit one free throw and Cox put back a missed three-pointer to make the score, 74-70, with 50 seconds on the clock.
Merlo hit two free throws for a six point lead. Wixted drew the fifth foul on Stewart, scoring and converting the free throw to cut the lead to three.
McDaniel missed both free throws but controlled a missed three-pointer with six seconds to play. They hit both to secure the win, 78-73.
The #9-ranked Red Devils suffer their second straight loss, slipping to 18-4 overall and 11-4 in the Centennial Conference.
Wixted had a monster outing, scoring a game-high 29 points, going 9-for-10 from the free throw line. He had a game-high 13 rebounds as well. Angradi and Wixted combined for 53 points on the night as Angradi hit five three-pointers to score 24.
Hinnenkampk tallied eight points, eight rebounds and four assists. Cox added eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
Merlo led McDaniel (14-8. 9-6) with 25 points, hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers.
The Red Devils (18-4, 11-4) return home to face #10-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday as part of Dickinson REDOUT. The Red Devil women face Bryn Mawr College at 2:00 pm, followed by the men.
