(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #9-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team came out on top of a top-25 match-up with #10-ranked Johns Hopkins, holding off the Blue Jays 59-57, on Saturday afternoon at the Kline Center.
Juniors Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) and Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) combined to force a turnover and Angradi capitalized with a pair of free throws in the final seconds. Hopkins had a desperation look at the buzzer but could not get the shot to fall.
The game was as close as expected right from the beginning as Johns Hopkins opened with a three-pointer and took a quick 5-2 lead. The Devils answered and pulled in front on a pair of Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) free throws.
Ryan Curran scored a lay-up and knocked down a three-pointer to give the Blue Jays a 10-6 advantage. They stretched the margin to 15-9, at the 12:37 mark.
The Red Devils pulled within two and traded baskets with the Blue Jays at the midpoint of the half. Cox dished a pair of beautiful assists to Robert Picka (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney), the second leading to a two-hand jam for the sophomore forward.
Hopkins went back in front by seven at the 4:06 mark. Gene Williams traded three-pointers with Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College), and Wixted knocked down a three-pointer and countered a lay-up by George Bugarinovic with a pair of free throws to make the score 32-28, at the break.
The Red Devils came out the break and went on a 7-0 run. Angradi started things off with a three-pointer and tacked on a pair of free throws after a lay-up from Wixted.
Omar Randall tied the game with a three-pointer and it would be back a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way. The Blue Jays tried to gain some separation, pulling in front by three. Wixted buried a three-pointer to knot the game, 45-45, with 6:33 left to play.
Williams hit a three-pointer to put Hopkins up, 51-48, with 4:42 remaining. Hinnenkamp drove to the hoop for a lay-up and Matt Billups went one-for-two from the line, giving the Blue Jays a 52-50 advantage with just over four minutes to play.
Senior guard Pete Yingst (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) made a great cut and Wixted found him for a lay-up to pull the Devils even. After Williams hit a free throw to give Hopkins a one-point edge. Wixted traded baskets with Jimmy Hammer, putting the Blue Jays on top, 55-54, at the 2:11 mark.
Hinnenkamp answered with a big jumper at the 1:35 mark. The Blue Jays went inside to Bugarinovic and he put Hopkins back on top, with just 52 seconds left to play.
Wixted was fouled and hit one-of-two from the line to tie the game for the ninth time, with 30 seconds remaining. Coming out of a timeout, the Devils jumped the ball as Hinnenkamp and Angradi forced a turnover.
Angradi was fouled on a three-point attempt from the corner, with just 2.4 seconds on the clock. He hit two free throws to put the Devils in front, 59-57. Hopkins rifled a pass to midcourt and called a timeout to try and set up a final attempt. The shot was off the mark as the Devils held on for the win.
Wixted led the Red Devils with 21 points, three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Hinnenkamp scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting while Angradi added nine points, hitting 4-of-5 free throws. Picka finished with seven points and three rebounds as well.
Bugarinovic led the Blue Jays (20-3, 14-2 CC) with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
The Red Devils improve to 19-4 overall and 12-4 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Wednesday night, hosting Muhlenberg College at 7:30 pm. They wrap up the regular season schedule next Saturday at Franklin & Marshall.
