(Chester, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team scored just nine seconds into overtime to post an 8-7 win at Widener University on Saturday.
Junior Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) scooped up a ground ball pass from first-year Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) as Campbell won the face-off, and fired a shot into the back of the net to lead the Red Devils to a thrilling road win.
Widener pulled even to force overtime with just four seconds remaining in regulation as Marc LeVine finished an assist from Patrick Richardson.
Dickinson jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter. Senior Colin Farrell (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern) put the Red Devils on the board at the 11:32 mark. Sophomore Greg Castro (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) struck again, just eight seconds later, controlling the face-off and scoring off the win.
Menard capitalized on a man-up opportunity, putting away an assist from first-year Chris Jones (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) with 9:06 remaining in the first quarter. First-year Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) stretched the lead to 4-0, scoring off an assist from Mike Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor), three minutes into the second period.
Vince Marra put the Pride on the board at the 11:11 mark. Tim Taylor added back-to-back goals, scoring the second with just 48 seconds remaining in the half to cut the deficit to 4-3 at the break.
The third quarter saw defense and strong goaltender as junior Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) turned away seven shots while the teams traded lone goals to give the Red Devils a 5-4 lead, heading into the final quarter.
Nick Streibich scored off an assist from LeVine on a man-up goal to knot the game, 4-4, with 1:43 to play in the third. First-year Mitchell Andres (East Lyme, Conn./Berkshire) put Dickinson back in front, scoring with just 34 seconds on the clock.
LeVine fed Taylor to tie the game, 46 seconds into the final period. Junior Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) traded goals with Richardson to knot things up once again, with 5:15 remaining in regulation.
Sophomore Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) answered a minute later to put the Devils in front, 7-6, with just over four minutes to play.
LeVine extended the game, scoring with just four ticks on the clock, setting up the heroics for Campbell and Menard.
Graham Parsons (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) controlled three ground balls and Michael Smith (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) caused a pair of turnovers. Jake Harrington (Bedford, N.Y./Bedford) added three caused turnovers and a pair of GBs. Ace Sudah (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Joseph's) picked-up three GBs as well.
Baxter finished with 13 saves on the day. Castro won 5-of-8 face-offs while Campbell added three wins.
Taylor finished with a hat-trick for Widener (0-6) while Chris Treat made 11 saves on the day.
The Red Devils travel to Stevenson University next weekend for the Green Turtle Mid-Season Classic. The Red Devils are scheduled to face Lynchburg College on Friday at 3:00 pm and square-off against Nazareth College at 3:00 pm on Saturday.
