(Owings Mills, Md.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team rallied to outscore Nazareth College, 9-5, in the second half, but the Golden Flyers were able to hold on for a 13-11 win in the first round of the Green Turtle Mid-Season Classic at Stevenson University.
Nazareth jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Luke Wooters dished out a pair of assists and scored once on his own to cap the opening run. The Flyers capitalized on a slashing penalty to net their fifth of the game at the 1:44 mark of the first quarter.
The Red Devils countered with an extra-man goal to open the second period. Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) finished an assist from Will Trevenan (Montclair, N.J./Taft) at the 12:26 mark, to put the Devils on the board.
Wooters answered just over a minute later, then handed out an assist to Will Fallo for another extra-man goal. Sophomore Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored off an assist from goaltender Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) at the 4:07 mark.
Nazareth struck again to take an 8-2 advantage into the break. Dickinson struck first in the third, scoring a man-up goal with first-year Dylan Mahar (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) finding the back of the net off a feed from Chris Jones (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK).
Nazareth stretched the lead to 9-3, taking advantage of another man-up opportunity at the 10:46 mark. Dickinson would cut the deficit in half with a 3-0 run, late in the third quarter. Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) started the rally, scoring off a feed from Kobi Frankel (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon).
Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) fed Llewellyn and then cut the margin to 9-6, scoring off an assist from Murphy, with 4:24 to play in the quarter.
Wooters would continue to be the thorn for the Devils, striking again at the 2:25 mark. Dan O'Brien stretched the lead to 11-6 at the end of the third. The Red Devils made another 3-0 run, making things interesting at the start of the fourth.
Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) struck, just seven seconds into the fourth. First-year Mitchell Andres (East Lyme, Conn./Berkshire) and Kendall found twice to pull the Devils within a pair of goals, with 10:34 left to play. The teams would trade goals over the final 8:48 as Nazareth held on for the 13-11 decision.
After Nazareth scored, George Mazarakis (Montclair, N.J./Kent School) finished an assist from Andres. Wooters fed Troy Haefele for a three-goal advantage. Llewellyn closed out the game with his 10th goal of the season, scoring off an assist from Austin Dodson (Bethesda, Md./Landon) in the final minute.
Baxter finished with 14 saves, making 10 in the second and third quarters, adding three ground balls. Llewellyn tallied a hat-trick while Kendall struck twice, and Menard and Murphy each added a goal and assist. Ace Sudah (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Joseph's) caused a pair of turnovers in the midfield.
Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairfield) and Zach Blumenstein (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) combined for 10 face-off wins on the day.
Wooters finished with three goals and four assists to lead Nazareth (4-2) while Haefele added two goals and four assists. Michael Cuciti finished with six saves.
