(Owings Mills, Md.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team suffered another tough loss, falling to #11-ranked Lynchburg College, on day two of the Stevenson University Green Turtle Midseason Classic. The Hornets jumped out to an early lead and went on to a 14-9 victory.
The Red Devils struck first as first-year Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) scored off an assist from classmate Mitchell Andres (East Lyme, Conn./Berkshire) at the 12:40 mark of the opening quarter.
Lynchburg countered, scoring five straight to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first period. Dickinson scored first in the second but would face a similar result as the Hornets added four goals to take a 9-3 advantage into the break.
Kobi Frankel (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) found the net, just 1:42 into the period. Colin McGuire answered for Lynchburg before Mike Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Berkshire) finished an assist from Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley), with 7:46 to play in the half.
Lynchburg capitalized on a pair of extra-man opportunities, and scored with just five seconds remaining to take a 9-3 lead into halftime.
The Red Devils looked to rally, coming out of the break, scoring three straight goals to cut the deficit to 9-6. Lynchburg scored at the 7:45 mark before Chris Jones (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) netted an extra-man goal, off an assist from Kendall, with 5:19 to play in the third. Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from defensive midfielder Ace Sudah (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Joseph's).
McGuire scored again and then assisted Austin Stewart on his fourth of the game to give the Hornets a 12-7 advantage, heading into the final stanza.
The teams traded goals over the opening eight minutes of the quarter for the final of 14-9. Murphy returned the favor, feeding Andres, and Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 6:55 mark.
D.J. Henderson (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) led the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. First-year Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) won 11 face-offs, claiming 4-of-5 in the fourth quarter, and controlled four GBs.
Junior goaltender Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) made 12 saves on the day while Chris Hawley stopped 10 shots for Lynchburg. The Hornets improve to 5-2 on the season.
The Red Devils slip to 2-5 overall. They open Centennial Conference play on Wednesday, traveling to McDaniel College for a 7:00 pm start.
