(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson volleyball team kept coming after visiting Muhlenberg but just couldn't overtake the Mules, falling in three sets on Wednesday night at the Kline Center.
The Red Devils put up a fight in all three sets, erasing a 14-5 deficit in the opener to close the gap to 23-21. Muhlenberg secured the final two points to claim the opening set, 25-21.
The Devils played even with the Mules in the second, playing to an 11-11 tie. Muhlenberg tried to pull away, leading 20-14 before Dickinson looked to rally. Back-to-back service aces from first-year Hannah Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) cut the margin to 21-19. Muhlenberg would hold on for a 25-22 decision to take a 2-0 advantage in the series.
After a tight start, the Mules started to gain some separation, holding a 12-6 lead. The Red Devils called a timeout with Muhlenberg leading 18-12. They looked to rally once more, pulling within four at 20-16. A Dickinson side-out gave the Devils the serve, trailing 23-19, but Muhlenberg would hold on to capture the match, 25-19.
Senior Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) led the attack with a match-high nine kills, adding five digs on the night. Hannah Smith finished with a match-high 27 assists while Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) added 12 digs.
Lauren Ahern (Downingtown, Pa/Downingtown West) tallied seven kills while sophomore Gillian Chan (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) chipped in with four kills, one solo block and four block assists. Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) put down six kills and tallied five blocks on the night.
Muhlenberg improves to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils slip to 6-11 and 0-3 in the CC. Dickinson returns to action next Wednesday night, traveling to McDaniel College for a 7:00 pm start.
