Box Score (Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team made a great run at Swarthmore College on Thursday night but the Garnet used solid free throw shooting down the stretch to claim an 82-68 win.
Swarthmore scored twice to start the game before senior guard Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) buried a three-pointer to put the Devils on the board. Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) hit a three-pointer before the hosts built the lead to 17-8.
Angradi and Hinnenkamp led the charge as the Devils battled back. Angradi knocked down a big three, off a kick-out from Jule Brown (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) to tie the game, 21-21, at the midpoint of the half.
Shane Loeffler banged a three-pointer to put the hosts back on top, but Brown drew a foul and hit both free throws and Hinnenkamp gave Dickinson its first lead of the night with a nice spin move on the base line. He blocked a shot on the other end but the Garnet grabbed the rebound and regained the lead.
Matt Brennan stretched it to three before Hinnenkamp answered again to cut the lead to one. He added a three-point play to put the Devils up, 30-28, with seven minutes to play in the half.
The Garnet scored and drew a charge on Hinnenkamp. First-year Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) came away with a steal and drew a charge on back-to-back Garnet possessions but the Devils were unable to convert.
Robbie Walsh broke the tie with a baby hook at the five minute mark. He added a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 34-30. Hinnenkamp scored again and Michael Jurzynski (Pearl River, N.Y./The Master's School) hit a three-pointer from the corner to put Dickinson back on top, 35-34.
The Garnet came back immediately as Sean Thaxter's foul line jumper changed the lead again. Andrew Kaufman added two free throws and Walsh put-back a strong offensive rebound to give Swarthmore a 40-35 lead at the end of the first half.
The teams traded steals before Sam Lebych sank a three-pointer from the corner to open the second half. Brown fed Hinnenkamp for a quick score on the other end.
Walsh broke a scoring drought with a free throw at the 15:23 mark, putting Swarthmore up, 44-37. Wright countered with a great move to answer on the other end. Brown rattled a three-pointer between a pair of Swarthmore field-goals to make the score 48-42.
Matt Brennan assisted Kaufman on a base line jumper and knocked down a three-pointer to extend the margin to 11 as the game approached the 11 minute mark. Brennan hit a triple from the corner to give Swarthmore a 58-45 lead.
The Garnet gained some momentum and stretched the lead to 17. The Devils kept coming, cutting the deficit to 11, with four minutes to play. Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) cut the lead to nine with a pair of free throws with 2:25 to play.
The defense held, forcing a turnover with 2:04 on the clock. The Devils went to Hinnenkamp, who finished a reverse lay-up. After two free throws, Jurzynski grabbed his own miss and scored to cut the lead to seven, with 1:33 to play in regulation.
Swarthmore would hold on with solid free throw shooting down the stretch, closing out the game with a final score of 82-68.
Brennan led Swarthmore with 22 points, going 8-for-8 from the line. The Garnet shot 93 percent from the free throw line as they improve to 11-3 overall and 5-2 in the Centennial Conference.
Hinnenkamp recorded a double-double with a game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds. Jurzynski reached double-figures with 11 points and Angradi added nine. Hinckley dished out five assists and went 3-for-4 from the line.
The Red Devils slip to 4-10 overall and 3-4 in the conference. They travel to Haverford College on Saturday for a 4:00 pm tip-off.
