Box Score (La Plume, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team battled through a hard fought, five-set match at Keystone College on Saturday, coming away with a 3-2 victory.
The Giants came out strong, winning the opening set, 25-16. The Red Devils then sandwiched a pair of 25-22 winning sets around a 25-22 third, claimed by Keystone to force a deciding fifth stanza.
The hosts took a 3-0 lead in the first before Dickinson came back, making the score 7-5. The Giants gained some separation in the middle of the set and held the lead for a 1-0 start.
The hosts led 6-1 to start the second but the Devils slowly chipped away and pulled even at 11-11. The lead would go back and forth until another tie at 20-20. Dickinson claimed the next point and held the lead to pull even, 25-22.
The third was almost the opposite as a good start by Dickinson led to Keystone clawing back into it, to again tie the match 20-20. They capitalized on some attacking errors by the Devils to hang on for the win. The fourth set was close from the beginning and Keystone looked to on their way to closing things out, taking five-point lead, 20-15.
The Devils were not quite through, however, grinding their way back to pull even, 22-22. The Devils won the final three points to force a deciding fifth set as Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) and Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) recorded back-to-back kills to close out the set.
The lead swayed in the fifth as Dickinson opened with a 4-1 lead. The Giants answered and led 12-10 before the Devils made a final push to end the match. Kills from Lauren Ahern (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) and Park tied the match, forcing a Keystone timeout.
Dickinson pulled even on a service error, tying the score at 14-14. Park tallied back-to-back kills to end the match, 16-14.
Ahern finished with a match-high 16 kills, adding three blocks assists. Bongo tallied 13 kills and 15 digs while Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) reached double-figures with 10 kills.
First-year Leah Guzick (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) and Alex Berezan (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott Secondary) combined for 41 assist and 15 digs on the day. Senior Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) recorded a match-high 22 digs while Emeline Jones (Hamilton, N.Y./Hamilton) and Jacqueline Banker (Rockaway Park, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy) tallied nine and eight, respectively.
The Red Devils improve to 8-8 overall. They return to Centennial Conference action on Wednesday night, hosting McDaniel College at 7:00 pm.
