Devils Battle Bullets in Thrilling 2-2 Draw

Box Score

(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team traveled to Gettysburg for a key Centennial Conference match-up on Saturday night. The teams traded penalty kicks and the Devils tallied a game-tying goal with 1:10 remaining in a 2-2, double-overtime draw.

Both teams used exceptional passing to move the ball in the first half, but neither could produce a goal. Senior goaltender Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) turned away a hard shot with 28 minutes to play in the half.

Palcan made three saves in the first half while the Devils saw three shots go wide on the other end.

Each team had a pair of corners and the Bullets drew a dangerous free-kick late in the first half that was pulled in by Palcan to keep the match level.

Gettysburg capitalized with a penalty kick in the 58th minute as Henry Smith converted the try.

Just moments later the Devils earned a penalty kick of their own and junior Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) found the back of the net to pull the Devils even.

The teams traded chances and corners with Palcan coming up with another big save with a little over 24 minutes to play. The Devils countered and produced another corner but the Bullets gained possession.

A free-kick just outside the area led to the go ahead goal for Gettysburg as Smith found the left corner of the net with 21 minutes to play in regulation.

The Bullets kept pressing, sending a shot wide and forcing another stop from Palcan.

Edmonds ripped a shot off the hands of Thomas Keane to force a corner for Dickinson but the Bullets were able to clear and used some nifty passing to create a strong shot but Palcan made the save.

The Devils had two great chances at the three minute mark but Keane was able to keep the Bullets in front. Dickinson would find the net with just 1:10 remaining however, to send the game into overtime.

Senior Danny Sheppard (Rydal, Pa./Abington) redirected a header off a free-kick from James Bundren (Herndon, Va./Oakton) to give the Devils new life.

The teams played through two scoreless but thrilling overtimes as the intensity remained until the final whistle of a well-played match by both teams.

Dickinson held a 22-16 advantage in shots and a slim 7-6 edge in corners on the night. Keane finished with five saves while Palcan made seven stops on the night.

The Bullets move to 7-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference. The Red Devils stand at 5-7-1 and 2-3-1 in the CC. Dickinson hosts Swarthmore College next Saturday at 3:00 pm.
