Box Score (Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team took a set from Centennial Conference leader Johns Hopkins on Wednesday night, but Blue Jays remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-1 decision.
The hosts won the first two sets (25-16, 25-12) before the Red Devils rallied to a 27-25 win in the third. The Blue Jays made a big run in the fourth to finish the match, 25-14.
The Blue Jays broke a 3-3 tie with a 10-2 run in the opening set and then pulled in front 19-9. The Red Devils traded points at the end but were unable to close the gap.
Hopkins started off the second with a 5-1 lead and capitalized on some Red Devil miscues to stretch the margin to 12-4. First-year Alex Berezan (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott Secondary) countered with a kill to break up the run.
Senior Arielle Misrok (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) served an ace and Erin Bongo (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Knolls) joined Norma Jean Park (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) for a block to cut the deficit to 16-9.
Park led a ferocious rally at the net, turning back three straight attacks and digging a fourth. Park and Bongo had another big block as the Devils looked to keep pace but Hopkins would claim the second, 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead.
The Devils played even to start the third, holding a 5-5 tie. Hopkins pulled in front 10-6 but Dickinson would capitalize on errors to pull within one.
The Devils slipped in front, 19-18, before the Blue Jays regrouped for four straight points. Dickinson tied the match on back-to-back kills from Megan Gombatz (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) and Berezan. Berezan served an ace and then the teams traded errors to give the Devils a set-point advantage.
The Blue Jays held and pulled in front, 25-24. Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) came up with a huge solo block and Misrok followed up with an ace to give the Devils a 26-25 lead. An attack error gave the set to Dickinson and forced a fourth set.
The teams battled their way to a 6-6 tie in the fourth. Hopkins strung together six straight points before Beecher broke up the run with a big kill from the right side.
Hopkins started to pull away again, stretching the lead to 17-7. The Devils traded points and looked to make a run after a big hit in the middle and an ace from Park. Beecher and Berezan added a block to keep the run going but the Blue Jays closed out the set, 25-14.
Misrok tallied a match-high 20 digs, adding five assists and a pair of aces on the night. Berezan tallied 11 assists, three block assists and four digs while Leah Guzick (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) added five assists and a pair of kills.
Park finished with six kills and four block assists. Bongo had five kills and Beecher chipped with four with each recording a pair of big blocks.
Johns Hopkins improves to 7-0 in the conference and 13-7 overall. The Red Devils slip to 10-11 overall and 3-5 in the CC. Dickinson returns home to face Ursinus and Eastern Mennonite in a tri-match on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
