#12-Ranked Haverford Holds Off Devils 2-1

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team squared-off against visiting #12-ranked Haverford College in a rematch of the 2015 Centennial Conference title match. The teams played a hard fought battle throughout the entire 90 minutes with all of the scoring coming in the first half.

The Red Devils struck first but Haverford would answer with a pair to claim a 2-1 decision at Miller Memorial Field on Saturday night.

First-year Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimball Union Academy, N.H.) put Dickinson on the board early, collecting a loose ball, just inside the penalty box and ripped a shot into the right corner of the net, just 2:52 into the match.

The goal came after a long serve into the area that was headed away by a defender, but right to the foot of a crashing McGovern who had a great look at the goal.

Haverford countered in the 14th minute when first-year Nick Janelli worked his way into the attacking third and found the net to pull the 'Fords even. Haverford took the lead on an incredibly placed strike into the top corner of the net as Michael Carr took a chance from long range and was able to connect.

The Red Devils had some strong chances to tally the equalizer in the second half, but just couldn't find the target. Senior Danny Sheppard (Rydal, Pa./Abington) redirected a nice header off a free-kick but Justin Astesano came away with a big save.

Junior Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) made a nice attacking run and had a quality shot, and had another strong opportunity as he bent a corner kick on net but Astesano came away with two more critical saves.

Senior goaltender Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) made a great play on the ball to stall a dangerous opportunity in the second half. He also finished with three key saves and turned in a strong performance in the nets.

Astesano made five saves on the night as Haverford improves to 8-2-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

The Red Devils slip to 5-6-1 overall and 2-3-0 in conference play. They are on the road on Wednesday, traveling to the University of Scranton for a 4:00 pm kick-off.
