Box Score (Swarthmore, Pa.) – A desperate and necessary gamble in the final seconds paid off for unbeaten host Swarthmore College as they hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime. The Garnet would survive in the end, holding on for a 72-65 win on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils led by three with just over three seconds remaining in regulation and Swarthmore was at the line with just one free throw. Matt Brennan missed intentionally and the rebound bounced right into the hands of Zac O'Dell, who flipped the ball to Zack Yonda for a buzzer-beating triple to send the game into overtime.
After the Red Devils led for the majority of regulation, Swarthmore used a three-point play to take the early advantage in overtime. The Garnet led by four before Michael Jurzynski (Pear River, N.Y./Master's School) answered with a three-point play to cut the deficit to one.
Yonda scored on the other end but sophomore guard Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) pulled the Devils even with a big three-pointer from the left wing. Swarthmore closed out the game, hitting 7-of-8 free throws to claim the win.
The game was close throughout the first half with Dickinson holding a slim advantage. Jurznski finished strong with back-to-back field-goals to give the Red Devils a 31-28 lead at the break.
A strong start in the second quickly stretched the lead to 10 as Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) scored back-to-back buckets and sophomore Corey Sherman (Penn Valley, Pa./Lower Merion) knocked-down a three-pointer.
Swarthmore chipped away at the lead and went in front, 53-52, on a Yonda lay-up with just over three minutes remaining. Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) gave the lead back to the Devils with a pair of free throws. He added another and Wright put Dickinson up, 57-53, with 30 seconds to play.
Nate Shaffer hit a field-goal before a pair of Jurzynski free throws moved the lead back to four, with just 13 seconds on the clock. Wright came up with a huge blocked shot on a three-point attempt before the last second rally by the Garnet forced the extra frame.
Swarthmore remained unbeaten, improving to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Wright led the Red Devils with 16 points behind 8-of-11 shooting while Jurzynski reached double-figures with 15 points and four rebounds. Sherman finished with eight points with Hinckley and Melton both scoring seven. First-year Bryce Allen (Albany, N.Y./The Hill School) tallied seven points and three assists.
