Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team continued its strong start to the 2016 season, posting a 14-7 win over visiting Montclair State on Saturday afternoon at Biddle Field.
The Red Devils struck first on a beautiful fast break with senior Graham Parsons (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) feeding a long pole assist to classmate Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) at the 10:29 mark of the first quarter.
Menard fired a laser into the back of the net to put the Devils up, 2-0, with 5:54 to play in the first quarter. The Red Hawks answered just 33 seconds later with Brady Wulster scoring off an assist from Don Finn to make the score 2-1, at the end of the first.
Dickinson opened the second on a penalty but were unable to capitalize. The second quarter belonged to the defense as the Red Devils tallied the only marker of the period to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Sophomore Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) made a nifty dodge to net his third goal of the season.
Senior goaltender Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's) turned away seven shots in the second quarter, stopping 11 in just the first half.
The third quarter shifted to a little more offense as Dickinson held a 4-3 edge in the third to hold a 7-4 advantage, heading into the fourth.
Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) sandwiched a pair of unassisted tallies around Wulster's second of the day to open the third.
Montclair capitalized on a penalty with Zach Schreck netting an extra-man goal off an assist from Brett Mangan. Menard answered with back-to-back goals at the 7:33 mark and again with 4:01 on the clock to put Dickinson up, 7-3. Schreck closed out the third, finishing another helper for Finn at the 2:35 mark.
Dickinson struck twice in the opening 1:19 of the final quarter to stretch the margin to 9-4. Menard went solo once again before Chase Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) scored off an assist from Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield).
The Red Hawks tallied a pair of goals around a strike from first-year John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Ind./Brother Rice) to make the score 10-6, with 12:18 remaining in the game. Menard picked up an assist for his sixth point of the afternoon.
The Red Devils then went on a 4-0 clip with Kendall netting his fifth of the season with an assist from Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) at the 11:59 mark.
Dickinson added three more in a span of just 2:14, triggered by a transition goal from long pole defender John Bower (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield). Lockwood dodged his way to his fifth of the season and Strods finished a feed from Chase Phillips for their final goal of the day.
Connor Cunningham scored his second, with an assist from Schreck for the final of 14-7.
Junior Blase Mantineo led Montclair, winning 14-of-23 face-offs and controlling 10 ground balls. Defenseman Ryan Young caused a pair of turnovers and picked up five GBs. Lucas Jones made five saves.
Menard had a monster afternoon, scoring five goals and handing out one assist. Lockwood and Strods each scored twice while 10 players marked the scoring column with a goal or assist.
Parsons had another solid performance, controlling six ground balls. The Devils claimed 10-of-24 face-offs, led by a 4-for-6 showing by first-year Bobby Hartwick (Brookville, Md./Georgetown Prep). Baxter finished with 16 saves in the Red Devil nets.
The Red Devils improve to 3-0 on the season. They are on the road next Saturday, traveling to #17-ranked Cabrini College for a 1:00 pm face-off.
