Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team turned in a great performance on Saturday, outscoring visiting Widener University, 8-2, in the first half on the way to a 16-6 decision at Biddle Field.
Junior Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) struck early, scoring unassisted, just 30 seconds into the game. Marc LaVine answered for Widener at the 13:41 mark before the Red Devils exploded with four straight to take a 5-1 lead.
Shane Taylor closed out the quarter with a late goal to make the score, 5-2, at the end of the first. The Red Devils made a late surge at the end of the first half to stretch the margin to 8-2, Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) finished a beautiful feed from John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice), with 6:31 remaining in the second quarter.
Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) found the net off an assist from Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) before seniors Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) and Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) connected on a man-up opportunity with 2:55 to play in the half.
Menard scored his 100th career point last week, netting five goals against Cabrini College.
The Devils kept pushing forward after the break, netting five straight to take control in the third quarter. Llewellyn made a repeat performance, scoring just 18 seconds in to start the half. Kendall and junior Chase Phillips (Charlotte, N.C./Monticello) followed up with unassisted tallies before Llewellyn struck again, off an assist from Menard.
Strods would tally again to stretch the margin to 13-2, scoring off a pass from Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit), with 4:14 to play in the third.
Tim Taylor slipped a shot into the net with just one second remaining to end the third, 13-3. Taylor scored at the 12:35 mark and Kevin Kerby scored to cut the deficit to 13-5, with 8:12 remaining.
Mitchell Andres (East Lyme, Conn./Berkshire) answered and Will Trevenen (Montclair, N.J./Taft) scored off an assist from Chris Clementi (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) for a 15-5 advantage.
Kerby came back with one last goal for Widener before Menard tallied another man-up goal with an assist from Kendall.
Tyler McClary made 14 saves in goal for Widener and Matt Horton came on to stop five shots in the final 19 minutes.
The Red Devils were dominant on face-offs as Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairfield) won 14-of-18 and controlled eight ground balls, and Bobby Hartwick (Brookville, Md./Georgetown Prep) claimed 3-of-5 with three GBs.
Patrick Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) anchored a strong defensive effort in front of Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's), who made six saves. Andrew Jones (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and Michael Marinelli (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) came on to make three saves.
The Red Devils improve to 4-1 on the season. They travel to Stevenson University next weekend for the Mustang Classic. Dickinson will face Denison University at 12:30 pm on Friday and return to face the hosts on Saturday night at 8:00 pm.
