Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team had a tough start to the 2016 season, falling to visiting Randolph Macon College, 51-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets capitalized on an interception at midfield on the Devils' opening drive, going 63 yards and scoring on an 11 yard pass with 9:40 remaining in the first quarter. They held on fourth down to take over at the Dickinson 38. The Red Devils were able to stall the drive, forcing a 26 yard field-goal by Seth Yurgel.
The Red Devils opened the second quarter with an interception from Erik Dettloff (Fallston, Md./Fallston), giving the Devils possession at midfield. Dickinson was forced to punt and Stephen Walker (Darien, Conn./Darien) boomed a punt, downed on the five yard line. RMC quickly countered as Tre Frederick broke free and went 95 yards for a Yellow Jacket touchdown. The extra-point hit the upright, making the score, 16-0, with 12:22 to play in the half.
The teams traded punts with Walker sending a 48 yard attempt the Yellow Jacket 15 yard line. Walker had a 38 yard attempt just skip into the end zone, giving Randolph Macon the ball on their own 20 yard line with 6:48 on the clock. They burned just under six minutes on the next drive, scoring on the 16th play to take a 23-0 lead into halftime.
Randolph Macon would receive to start the second half as Frederick went 46 yards to the Dickinson 45. The Yellow Jackets burned another 5:39 before Joe Vairo hit Sean McDonald for a seven yard touchdown. J.J. Hill intercepted a pass and went 90 yards to stretch the lead to 37-0 at the midpoint of the third quarter.
The Yellow Jackets closed out the scoring with a 67 yard run from Eric Hoy and used a 56 yard drive in the fourth for the final.
Sophomore quarterback Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) threw for 129 yards, completing 15-of-34 passes and ran for 31 yards on the day. He connected with Jake Walbert (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) for a 30 yard pass. Walbert finished with 58 yards on four catches.
Senior James Ward (Hatfield, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) covered 58 yards on four kick-off returns, setting the school record with 1,404 return yards in his career. He also holds the all-time mark for kick-off returns with 66.
Walker finished with eight punts for 321 yards on the day, averaging 40.1 yards per attempt, dropping three inside the 20.
Dettloff led the defense with nine tackles, a forced fumble and an interception. Senior Kevin Sherry (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) tallied eight stops and a tackle-for-loss. Bryan Latorraca (Stamford, Conn./St. Luke's) and Tyler Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each recorded eight tackle as well.
Frederick finished with 177 yards rushing and 46 yards on returns to lead Randolph Macon. Vairo completed 11-of-17 passes for 94 yards. Christian Redman was the top receiver, covering 52 yards on seven receptions. Conner Lane led the defense with eight tackles, including two-for-losses. Michael Farry and Billy Mullen each tallied seven tackles.
The Red Devils open Centennial Conference play next weekend, traveling to Juniata College for a 1:00 pm kick-off.
