Devils Shoot Well to Top Washington 96-91

(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team made a huge run in the second half and held off a tenacious rally by Washington College to come away with a 96-91 victory in Chestertown on Saturday.

The Red Devils scored their first nine points from the free throw line as they trailed 11-9 in the opening five minutes of the contest. Sophomore Michael Jurzynski (Pearl River, N.Y./The Master's School) tied the game with the first field-goal of the day for the Red Devils, at the 14:51 mark.

Dickinson used six more free throws to help pull in front, 19-11, with 10:56 remaining in the half. Junior Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) knocked down a three-pointer to put the Devils up, 28-16, before Washington answered with a 10-2 run to pull within four, at the 4:41 mark.

The teams traded field-goals with Josh Porteous scoring the final bucket of the half to pull the hosts within two at 41-39.

The Shoremen struck first after the break to tie the game and held a 53-52 advantage at the midpoint of the second half. The Red Devils then put together a 22-4 run, jumping out in front by 19, with 7:10 remaining in the game.

Washington wasn't quite done, however, making a run of their own to claw back into the game in the final minutes. The Shoremen put together a 13-1 clip, to cut the deficit to single digits with 3:28 left to play.

Dickinson worked the ball inside and continued to be solid at the foul line, holding the lead down the stretch. Washington would not go away until the very end as Jack Greer buried a three-pointer from the corner to make it a three-point game, 94-91, with just three seconds to play.

Romicki sank both free throws for the final of 96-91, matching a game-high with 22 points on the afternoon. Romocki went 5-for-5 and hit 11-of-15 from the free throw line, adding four rebounds and two assists.

Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) matched Romocki with a game-high 22, hitting 9-of-11 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 free throws to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jurzynski had a strong outing as well, hitting 7-of-9 shots and 4-of-5 free throws for 19 points. He added six rebounds and two assists as well.

Sophomore Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) reached double-figures with 11 points while Jule Brown (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) tallied six points and four assists.

Both teams shot extremely well with the Red Devils hitting 28-of-47 for 59.6 percent while Washington finished at 55.9, hitting 33-of-59 on the day. Dickinson had a solid performance at the line as well, hitting 36-of-49 for 73.5 percent.

Porteous led Washington with 21 points as they fall to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils improve to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference. Dickinson travels to Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday for an 8:00 pm tip-off with the Diplomats.
