Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's soccer team posted its seventh shutout of the season, holding off visiting Ursinus College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Miller Memorial Field.
The Red Devils controlled the run of play for the better part of the first half, but a solid defensive effort from the Bears' defense and senior goaltender Marissa Kalkstein kept the match even.
The Red Devils outshot the Bears, 5-2, and held a 6-0 advantage on corners in the first half, but were unable to produce many quality chances before the break.
Both teams appeared to pick up the intensity as the second half began. Dickinson continued to maintain the majority of possessions and started to produce some good opportunities in the attacking third.
The Red Devils were able to capitalize with 22 minutes remaining in regulation as first-year Kyra Thomas (Watertown, Conn./The Taft School) collected a loose ball inside the penalty area and put the ball in the back of the net for the lone goal of the match.
First-year Ellie Harris (Cabin John, Md./Walt Whitman) triggered the play, trying to connect with classmate Emma Moore (Davidsonville, Md./St. Mary's) but the ball was deflected and right to the foot of a waiting Thomas to finish with the first collegiate goal of her career.
The Red Devils had another strong scoring chance later as junior Killian Donohue (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) almost served a corner kick, directly into the back of the net.
Dickinson finished with a 13-3 shot advantage, not allowing a defensive corner while earning another four in the second half on the offensive end of the field.
Kalkstein finished with five saves for Ursinus (1-9-2, 1-5-1 CC) while junior Mary Katherine Brosnan (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) made a pair of saves to record her seventh shutout of the season as well.
The Red Devils improve to 10-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the Centennial Conference. They are off until next Saturday when they host Haverford College at 6:30 pm on senior night.
