Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team survived an overtime thriller to celebrate Senior Day with a key Centennial Conference win over visiting Haverford College on Saturday afternoon.
Haverford stuck first as Ben Field finished an assist from Nick Janelli in the 25th minute.
Senior Will Bracken (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) broke behind the defense and put a shot in the corner of the net to pull the Red Devils even with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the half.
After the break, the Red Devils had another big opportunity, drawing a penalty kick in the 58th minute, but Jeremy Astesano came away with a huge save.
The Red Devils pulled in front as sophomore Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimberley Union Academy) fed a great ball to classmate Kevin Gilbert (Boxford, Mass./Masconemet Regional), who slipped the ball under the goalkeeper to a 2-1 advantage, with 20 minutes to play.
The Fords would be awarded a penalty kick and Jannelli converted to level the match, 2-2, with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. The match remained tied and went into extra time.
The Red Devils immediately went on the attack and drew their second penalty kick of the match. Astesano would through again, turning away the shot to keep the Fords alive, at least temporarily.
The Red Devils would net the game-winner as senior Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) finished with a header in a crowd on the six yard line.
Haverford held a slim edge in shots, 15-13, and had a 6-4 advantage on corners. Astesano finished with six saves while sophomore Frederick Meagher (Southport, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe) turned away six shots for the Red Devils.
Haverford falls to 9-4-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference. The Red Devils improve to 10-4-2 on the season and 4-2-2 in conference play. They travel to Johns Hopkins next Friday night for the regular season finale with the opening kick-off set for 7:00 pm.
