#13 Devils Pull Away From Pride for 12-6 Win

Box Score

(Chester, Pa.) – The #13-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team broke away in the second half on the way to a 4-0 start, posting a 12-6 win at Widener University on Sunday afternoon.

A defensive struggle in the first quarter led to just two goals. Senior Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) struck first, putting the Red Devils on the board at the 12:55 mark, scoring off an assist from first-year Nick Goles (Monkton, Md./Loyola Blakefield).

Widener answered, scoring man-down with 2:28 remaining in the quarter to tie the game, 1-1.

Sophomore Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) caused a turnover and converted it into a goal at the 12:23 mark of the second quarter to give Dickinson a 2-1 advantage.

Widener countered once again, this time on the up-side of an extra-man opportunity as Brady Franks finished an assist from Paz Gismondi, with 9:20 to play in the first half.

Sophomore John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) took advantage of another Pride turnover with an unassisted goal with 6:29 on the clock.

Widener tallied back-to-back goals at the 5:42 mark and again with 5:18 to play in the half, taking a 4-3 lead.

Junior Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) found the net to pull the Devils even, just 16 seconds later. Lockwood fed Maher to put Dickinson back in front and closed out the half with his second goal of the game for a 6-4 lead at the break.

The Devils opened the second half with a pair of early goals. Maher stretched the lead to three and Lockwood tallied another assist, feeding Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) for an 8-4 margin, with 11:04 to play in the third.

Widener cut the deficit to three, making the score, 8-5, before the teams went scoreless for the last 9:25 of the quarter.

The Red Devils looked to gain some breathing room as Strods and Lockwood found the net again and senior Mike Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) stretched the lead to 11-5, with 6:31 remaining in the game.

Sophomore Jack O'Connell (Sands Lake, N.Y./Westminster) tacked on another with an assist from first-year Austin Helms (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford School) before Gismondi scored out of the face-off to break up the run for the final of 12-6.

Lockwood and Maher each recorded hat-tricks while Lockwood added a pair of assists. Strods scored twice and Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) controlled five ground balls.

Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) picked-up six ground balls and caused three turnovers, and junior goaltender Andrew Jones (Odenton, Md./Arundel) made eight saves on the day.

The Red Devils improve to 4-0 on the season. They travel to the Green Turtle Classic at Stevenson University next Friday and Saturday. They are set to face #19-ranked Denison University at 12:30 pm on Friday.
