Red Devils Rally to Keep Bucket With 24-21 Win

Box Score

(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson football team spoiled Gettysburg's homecoming with a thrilling, 24-21, victory on Saturday afternoon, scoring on a 31 yard field-goal by sophomore Ethan Fusco (Caldwell, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) with no time left on the clock.

The win was a big one for first-year Head Coach Brad Fordyce as the Red Devils keep possession of the coveted Little Brown Bucket for another year.

Fusco, a running back, earned the place-kicking job this week after an injury to sophomore Trystin Golowski (Columbus, N.J./Bishop Eustace). Fusco converted three extra-points in addition to his first collegiate field-goal, splitting the uprights as time expired.

The Red Devils had some work to do to put themselves in position for the game-winner. They trailed, 21-7, early in the third quarter but the defense would hold the Bullets scoreless for the final 27 minutes of the game.

Gettysburg scored twice in the opening quarter to take a 14-0 lead. First-year Christopher Longo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) proved to be a valuable target for classmate Robert Geiss (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), putting the Red Devils on the board with a 23 yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.

The Bullets stretched the lead to 21-7 at the 11:47 mark of the third quarter, but Dickinson was just getting started. Longo hauled in a 52-yard scoring strike from Geiss with 3:22 left to play in the third quarter. The pair would connect once again, early in the fourth, tying the game on a 15 yard pass with 13:19 on the clock.

The Red Devils had a big opportunity with just under seven minutes to play. Geiss was forced out of the pocket but able to throw a fourth-down pass attempt into the end zone. The pass was intercepted but would have resulted in a turnover either way if the Devils were unable to make a play.

Both teams held and traded punts on either side. Dickinson took over for the final drive on their own 38-yard line with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.

After a touchdown was called back for holding, the Red Devils ran one more play and ran the clock down to three seconds. That set the stage for Fusco's 31 yard game-winner to keep the Bucket in the hands of the Red Devils.

The Red Devils amassed 450 yards of total offense on the afternoon. Geiss completed 26-of-46 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns. His 304 passing yards rank him fourth on the single-game list in program history.

Longo covered 137 yards on seven catches, scoring three touchdowns on the day. Kyle Donahue (Glenside, Pa./Germantown Academy) caught seven passes for 85 yards while Daniel Salamone (Great Falls, Va./Langley) made nine receptions for 65 yards.

On the ground, sophomore Jeremy Walsh (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area) went over the century mark, rushing for 107 yards on 27 carries.

Senior Tyler Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the defense with nine tackles while Bryan Latorraca (Stamford, Conn./St. Luke's School) made seven stops, including a seven yard sack. First-year Taj DeFrance (Glassboro, N.J./Glassboro) added seven tackles as well and forced a fumble.

The Red Devils improve to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face #14-ranked Johns Hopkins University at 1:00 pm on Biddle Field.
