Devils Show Bright Spots in Season Opening Setback

(Ashland, Va.) – The Dickinson football team suffered a 41-6 setback in the season opener at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils did put up over 300 yards of total offense and brought in the punting unit just twice on the day.

Dickinson held the hosts to just a touchdown in the opening quarter as the Yellow Jackets sandwiched a pair of touchdown drives around a 24-yard field goal to pull in front, 17-0, at the 9:19 mark of the second.

The Red Devils answered with a 26-yard field goal from sophomore Trystin Golowski (Columbus, N.J./Bishop Eustace) at the 5:37 mark.

Randolph-Macon opened the second half with a 35-yard field goal before Golowski answered with his second of the day, from 36 yards out. The Jackets closed out the quarter with a touchdown and tacked on a pair in the fourth for the final of 41-6.

The Red Devils did produce 335 yards of offense on the day. Junior quarterback Billy Burger (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) threw for 212 yards, completing 20-of-32 pass attempts. Classmate Jake Walbert (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) led all receivers with 85 yards on four catches while Daniel Salamone (Great Falls, Va./Langley) made 10 catches for 57 yards.

Sophomore James Turner (Ridgefield, Conn./Suffield Academy) turned in a strong performance on defense, recording a game-high 15 tackles, including three-for-losses and eight solo stops. Classmate Jordan Hollander (Waverly, Pa./Abington Heights) tallied eight tackles and covered 89 yards on five kick-off returns while Tyler Heisey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added eight tackles as well.

Burke Estes completed 17-of-22 passes for 191 yards while Tre Frederick ran for a game-high 97 yards to lead the way for Randolph-Macon. Calvin Whitehead led the defense with 12 stops.

The Red Devils return to Carlisle for their Centennial Conference and home opener next Saturday. They will host Muhlenberg College at Biddle Field with a 1:00 pm kick-off.
