12th Shutout Sends Red Devils to NCAA Third Round

Box Score

(Amherst, Mass.) – The #11/15-ranked Dickinson women's soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship, knocking off host #20/11 Amherst College, 1-0, scoring with just five seconds remaining in the first half on Sunday.

Play went end line to end line in the opening 20 minutes. Amherst held a slight edge in scoring opportunities and forced a pair of corners, but the Red Devils held strong and moved the ball well through the midfield.

The Mammoths had a great chance on their third corner but sophomore Carli Boyer (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) made a strong save on the goal line.

Meg Tate (Carlsile, Pa./Carlisle) hit a shot just wide at the 11-minute mark and that triggered a spark as the Red Devils went into attack mode.

Tate had a shot blocked before Keira Shoup (Prince Frederick, Md./Calverton School) hit a shot off the crossbar and Elizabeth Krause (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) put the rebound on net forcing a huge save by Erica Sanders.

Krause would get a chance for redemption and cashed in, finding the back of the net with just five seconds to play in the first half.

The Red Devils drew a free kick and the serve was headed toward the goal and cleared away to the foot of Krause.

Dickinson went literally end line to end line with a nice counter early in the second half, but the ball slipped away at the end. Tate burst behind the defense and had a nice shot on goal, but Sanders made another big save.

Boyer came up big on the other end, knocking away a shot with 24 minutes on the clock.  She turned away a shot in a scramble and made a pair of diving saves as Amherst looked to net the equalizer.

Boyer made a brilliant save, tipping a hard-laced free kick over the cross bar and then turning away another hard shot on the corner.

The Red Devils held off a late furry from Amherst and will move on to face the winner of Johns Hopkins and Christopher Newport on Sunday night in Baltimore (7:00 pm).

Shots were even in the first half (7-7) before Amherst outshot the Devils 17-3 in the second. The defense held with Boyer making eight saves in the 12th shutout of the season.

The Red Devils tie the school record for wins as they improve to 16-2-4 on the season.
